NEW DELHI, OCT. 21. Having failed to get an appointment with the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party, led by its president, Harsh Vardhan, today sought the intervention of the former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, to save lakhs of entrepreneurs and industrial labourers from being displaced due to the closure of the industrial units in non-conforming areas of the Capital. Leading a delegation of BJP leaders and industrialists from the Capital, Dr.Vardhan requested Mr. Vajpayee to come forward to protect the industries in Delhi from being shut down arbitrarily and prevail upon the Prime Minister to issue an Ordinance for amending the Master Plan of Delhi to put an end to this new reign of terror being unleashed by the officials of the Delhi Government under the garb of the Supreme Court orders. The delegation informed Mr. Vajpayee that these days flying squads led by the area SDMs were going door to door to disconnect power and water connections to small scale and cottage industries. He said total chaos prevails in the Capital and already two entrepreneurs had lost their lives due to this action of the Delhi Government. Despite the loss of life and destruction of property, the Delhi Government as well as the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre had maintained a muted silence. It was stated that at present industrial units are functioning in 102 residential areas of Delhi. The livelihood of nearly 15 lakh people was at stake along with an investment of around Rs. 25,000 crores. These industries are an integral part of Delhi's economy and their closure would lead to a crisis like situation in the city. Dr. Vardhan said a decision to amend the Master Plan had already been taken by the Union Cabinet during the previous NDA regime and now the Union Government would only have to issue an Ordinance. He urged Mr. Vajpayee to take up the matter with Dr. Singh at the earliest so that lakhs of people are saved from being dislocated.
