Bangalore school wins debate

NEW DELHI OCT. 21. The 7th Doctor Mahbub-Ul-Haq Memorial Inter-School Debate Competition was held at the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation here on Tuesday. The debate is organised annually by the Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies (RGICS) in association with the United Nations Development Programme (NDP). This year around 350 schools took part in the competition. Eleven teams participated in the final round speaking on the topic "Respecting cultural identity reduces the risk of conflict in multi-cultural societies".

The chairman of National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council, V. Krishnamurthy, gave away the prizes. The National Public School, Banglore, bagged the first prize, while Ashok Hall Girls Senior Secondary School, Kolkata, and the Good Shepherd Matric School, Chennai, were awarded for the second and third position respectively. The best speaker for the motion was Saima Sheikh of Kamala High School, Mumbai, and best speaker against the motion was Neena Kaushik of St Thomas School in New Delhi.

Silver jubilee celebrated

NEW DELHI OCT. 21. The India International Rural Cultural Centre (IRCEN) celebrated its silver jubilee function at the FICCI auditorium here this past week.

The Founder president of Centre, former Chief Justice of India, Y.V. Chandrachud, inaugurated the year-long nationwide celebrations. "There are few organisations of this kind which are working so actively to promote cultural heritage of the country in rural and tribal areas," he said.

Justice Chandrachud conferred the 1st Gramini Award on Odissi danseuse Geeta Mahalik and singer Konkana Banerjee for their performances in tribal and rural schools and colleges in different States of the country.

Canara Bank's century

NEW DELHI OCT. 21. Canara Bank opened its fully computerised 100th branch in Delhi at Vasundhara Enclave on Thursday. The Chairman and Managing Director of the Bank, R.V. Shastri, inaugurated the branch. Other eminent people present on the occasion were R.K. Avasthi, S.C. Gupta, M.P. Mehrotra, and Prakash P. Mallya.

Last date for I-T return

NEW DELHI OCT. 21. The last date for filling of Income Tax Returns for 2004-05 is October 31, according an official release. PAN is to be duly quoted in the return and if PAN is not allotted, a copy of application for allotment is to be enclosed with the return. Return of salaried taxpayers, pensioners and senior citizens having no income from business should be filed at Mayur Bhawan and Connaught Place by October 27, after which the returns will only be accepted at special counters at Hall Number 18 in Pragati Maidan. There will be separate counters for senior citizens. People can file the return at Pragati Maidan from October 28 to 31 from 10 a.m. to 5.p.m., the release said.

Navaratra Puja today

NEW DELHI OCT. 21. The Mandala Poorthi Samprokshan Uthsav/ Puja for the Shri Radha Krishna Mandir will be performed at Sector IV, Vaishali, Ghaziabad, on Friday between 7-30 a.m. and 9 a.m.

According to a press release, Navaratra Puja is being performed in the traditional South Indian style through the display of Kolu. Women are participating daily in the Shri Lalitha Sahasranama Archana and shlokas are being recited by children.

The temple Kumbabhishekam was performed last month in the presence of Sri Kamakshi Swamiji of Chennai.
