SINGAPORE: In response to international concerns about the political fallout of the change of Prime Minister in Myanmar, the military junta has said that the "road map to democracy" was still very much on the national agenda. Gen. Khin Nyunt, who was dismissed as Prime Minister earlier this week, had set out a seven-point plan that came to be viewed as a road map towards democracy within the political parameters laid down by the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC). Stressing that Gen. Khin Nyunt was being "retired on health grounds", the SPDC said he would be replaced by Lt. Gen. Soe Win. The new Secretary-I of the SPDC, Lt. Gen. Thein Sein, told the Convening Commission of the National Convention in Yangon on Friday that the Government's road map remained unaltered with the change of Prime Minister. In a related development, the SPDC chairman, Senior General Than Shwe, promulgated a law on Friday, repealing the existing law relating to the National Intelligence Bureau. Accordingly, the bureau was dissolved with immediate effect. Gen. Khin Nyunt was the head of military intelligence when he was Prime Minister.
