Heavy rain in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam

THANJAVUR, OCT. 23. Rain lashed Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts today. The rain, which started in the early hours continued for most part of the day, forcing people to stay indoors. Heavy rain was also reported from Nagapattinam district.

Navaneetha Krishnan, Joint Director of Agriculture, Thanjavur, said the rain was beneficial to transplanted samba and thaladi crops.

Samba transplantation was completed on 65,000 hectares and thaladi on 13,000 hectares in this district.

The rainfall (in mm) recorded for the 24 hours ended 8 a.m. today is Tiruthuraipoondi in Tiruvarur district 53,

Thanjavur, Pattukottai and Vettikadu 16.2 each, Kumbakonam 49.5, Orathanadu 11, Neyvasal Thenpathy 17.2, Ayyampettai 18, Peravurani 15.2, Madukkur 12.2 and Adhirampattinam 19.7, Kodavasal 40 and Kollidam 37.

Water level in the Mettur dam stood at 87.10 feet this morning (full level 120 feet).

The storage was 49.395 tmcft. The inflow was 8,188 cusecs and the discharge 4,997 cusecs.

The discharge into the Cauvery was 3,510 cusecs, into the Vennar 1,200 cusecs, into the Grand Anaicut canal 2,513 cusecs and into the Kollidam 506 cusecs.

Heavy flow in Courtallam

Courtallam water falls experienced heavy inflow today following rain in the Western Ghats.

While water falls on the concrete arch in the Main Falls, all five branches of the Five Falls became one this evening due to floods.

The relatively moderate Old Falls was also vigorous this evening after it began to rain around 3.30 p.m.

Tourists were allowed to take bath only in the safer part of the falls.
