Facilities at university Sir, Though the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited the University of Mysore with five stars, the facility offered by the university to students raises doubts on what grounds the status is granted to educational institutions. The university opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 7. 40 p.m., and the students are facing hardship because they are unable to use the library after 7.40 p.m. Though the library has a diesel generator, the authorities concerned do not use it during power cuts. Most of the computers at the library are not working for want of proper maintenance. It is time that the authorities concerned set right these anomalies. Sudheer K.J., Mysore Fare hike unfair Sir, The bus fares were increased recently owing to the rising prices of petroleum products in the international market. But the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has increased its fares indiscriminately. The minimum fare is Rs. 2 and when the stage is crossed, it will be Rs. 4, even if it is one stop. The charges are unfair if the distance is shorter. In addition, the number and frequency of black/yellow board buses have been reduced in the Bangalore city limits, while that of red board buses have been increased. The fares are higher in red board buses compared to other two services. The charges of monthly passes have also been increased. For black board buses, it is Rs. 280 and Rs. 405 for red board buses. Because of this, black board buses are always crowded. It will be fair if the BMTC issue common passes for Rs. 340. This will not only help the BMTC but also the commuters.
Kalyani, Rajajinagar, Bangalore Ease traffic congestion Sir, The Bangalore Police Commissioner has said that flyovers have largely failed in easing traffic congestion in the city. They merely shift congestion from one point to another. Some flyovers are underutilised. He has also said that one-way traffic plans have helped in easing congestion to an extent. There is no doubt that converting Residency Road and Richmond Road into one ways is a good idea. It will help in the better utilisation of the flyover across Richmond Circle. Buildings on either side of these roads too have an equal responsibility of easing traffic congestion. Road users are put to hardship because the schools on these roads do not allow vehicles to enter their premises to pick and drop children. Moreover, basements of buildings meant for parking vehicles have been rented out for commercial purposes, putting additional burden on traffic management. It would be ideal if the authorities concerned declared "no parking" on busy roads such as Residency Road. M. Bhaktavatsala, Bangalore Develop localities Sir, Civic authorities have turned a blind eye to 11th and 12th Main roads of ISRO Layout so far as development is concerned. These two low-lying areas are in close proximity to Bikashipura. Asphalted 12 years ago, these main roads are in bad shape now. People find it difficult to use these roads whenever it rains. A few vacant sites with stagnant water adjacent to the storm water drain of 12th Main have become a breeding place for mosquitoes. A foul smell emanates from sewage accumulated in the drain, posing a health hazard to the residents of the area. It would be better if the authorities concerned replaced the stone slabs with concrete ones and built a retaining wall across the road to prevent flooding in the rainy season. S. Seshadri, Bangalore
