SANT KABIR NAGAR (UTTAR PRADESH), OCT. 24. One person was killed and nine, including six policemen, were injured in clashes today between police and a group who laid siege to the Bakhira police station here following a dispute over the immersion of idols of goddess Durga. Police opened fire when the mob tried to set the station ablaze following rumours that policemen were trying to immerse this morning some idols which could not be done last night, the Inspector-General of Police, Rameshwar Dayal said. Mr. Dayal said that six policemen were injured when they were manhandled by the mob as they tried to barge into the station. Nearly 50 persons have been arrested in this connection and additional police force and three companies of PAC have been rushed from Gorakhpur. The District Magistrate, Ramendra Tripathi, and the Superintendent of Police, Arvind Kumar Upadhyaya, were camping in the area where the situation is still tense. The station officer of the Bakhira police station, Hersewak Shukla, has been suspended following clashes between two communities on Saturday.
Communal disturbance
In another incident in Bhadohi, 12 persons were injured and many shops set afire after clashes broke out between two groups during the idol immersion procession in Kotwali area of the district. Police said today that two groups clashed last night during the procession, resulting in arson and violence. Twelve shops and four vehicles, including the District Magistrate's car, were damaged.
