`Lack of education, cause for backwardness'

By Our Special Correspondent

The former Minister, Kagodu Thimmappa, addressing the conference of Madiwala Sangha in Shimoga on Sunday.

SHIMOGA, OCT. 24. The former Minister, Kagodu Thimmappa, said here on Sunday that social discrimination had proved to be a great setback to the socially and economically exploited communities in the graded society.

Inaugurating the Shimoga District Madiwala Community Association, he attributed the backwardness of the socially disadvantageous sections to lack of education. He said that as it was not possible for these sections to acquire property, the only way for them to survive was to become educated.

Mr. Thimmappa said backward communities should make a concerted effort for social and economic development. It was unfortunate that women in all sections were subjected to social exploitation. The Government had initiated several steps to improve their lot by offering schemes and benefits similar to those available for the backward classes.

Mr. Thimmappa said the initiative taken by the Rajiv Gandhi Government to ensure adequate representation for women in the panchayat raj institutions was a major step to bring women into the national mainstream.

He asked the backward classes to achieve their development by modernising their traditional avocations.

The president of the District Congress Committee and MLC, Mir Azeez Ahmed, the Chairman of the Bhadra Command Area Development Authority, R. Prasannakumar, the Chairman of the Shimoga Urban Development Authority, N. Ramesh, the president of the District Khadi Gramodyog Mandali, H.G. Umapathy, and K. Padmanabh Udupa were present.

The President of the district Madiwala Association, C.S. Chandrabhupal, presided over the function.
