Colourful end to Madikeri Dasara

MADIKERI, OCT. 24. The Madikeri Dasara concluded on Sunday morning with the traditional offering of puja at the "Banni Mantap" in Mahadevpet. The razzle-dazzle of the "dasha mantaps" (10 decorated cars) taken out from as many temples, locked in a fierce competition for winning accolades, drew huge crowds in the city on Saturday and past midnight.

The cultural programmes at the Gandhi Maidan were inaugurated by the Assistant Director of the Department of Kannada and Culture, Damodar.

Cultural programmes

The cultural programmes which went on till the early hours of Sunday attracted a large number of people who sang and danced on the roads.

Huge crowds accompanied all the 10 cars which were bedecked for the final showdown. Almost all cars demonstrated the triumph of good over evil. Large dazzling cut-outs or figures of goddess Chamundeshwari in different forms from the four temples of Kundurumotte Chowtti Mariyamma, Dandina Mariyamma, Kote Mariyamma and Kanchi Kamakshi portrayed slaying of demons. Other cars were from the Chowdeshwari temple, Karawale Bhagawati temple, Pete Srirama Mandira, Dechur Srirama Mandira and Kodanda Rama Temple.

The Kodandarama Temple, Kote Ganapathi temple and Dandina Mariyamma temple cars won the first, second and third prizes, respectively. The judges announced this at a function on Sunday. The Kodagu District in-charge Minister, Tanvir Sait, the Madikeri MLA, K.G. Bopaiah, the Deputy Commissioner, Srikant Valagad, and the Superintendent of Police, Devajyoti Ray, distributed prizes to the winners. The working president of the Dasara Committee, G.M. Satish Pai, presided.
