`Sharana Samskruthi Utsava' ends

By Our Staff Correspondent

CHITRADURGA, OCT. 24. The weeklong "Sharana Samskruthi Utsava-2004", organised by the Sri Murugha Math, ended with thousands of people witnessing the annual ritual of ascendance of "Shoonya Simhasana" by the pontiff of the math, Sri Shivamurty Murugharajendra Swamiji, here on Sunday.

The swamiji ascended the "Shoonya Simhasana" amidst devotees singing the Vachanas of Basaveshwara. However, deviating from the tradition, he ascended the throne made of wood, wearing a "rudrakshi" crown.

He had refused to use the traditional items, terming them as "relics of feudalism and vulgar exhibition of wealth."

Speaking to The Hindu , the swamiji said that the real sharana, follower of Basaveshwara, should not go after such splendour and should lead a simple life.

He said he hoped that the Almighty solved all the problems faced by people.

The swamijis of several maths all over the State, noted writers, progressive thinkers, elected representatives, and artistes witnessed the event.

Citing personal reasons, the Chief Minister, N. Dharma Singh, who was to witness the event, cancelled his visit.

In the evening, a wrestling competition was held in memory of Sri Jayadeva Swamiji, former seer of Sri Math.

The children's session on Saturday attracted a large crowd.
