Four IMs score wins

By Our Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA, OCT. 23. All the four International Masters — Neelotpal Das, Sriram Jha, R.R. Laxman and D.K. Sharma — won their opening round matches in the National Rapid chess tournament at the Chenupati Ramakotaiah Municipal Corporation Kreeda Pranganam here on Sunday.

R.R. Laxman's Nimzo Indian defence enabled him wrest the advantage early against P. Pradeep Kumar. The latter's desperate pawn sacrifice in the middle game strengthened Laxman's position further. Thereafter, Pradeep's prospects dimmed, forcing him to resign in a time scramble.

From King's Indian defence, Matta Vinay Kumar's game went into minus, made worse by a piece sacrifice that was aimed at activation of his pieces.

Sriram Jha had only to convert that advantage for a comfortable win.

On the eighth board, National `A' player M. Srinivasa Rao was stunned by L.V. Siva Kumar.
