Vinod & Shamini claim titles

CHENNAI, OCT. 24. G. Vinod of Southern Railway, the second seed, overcame a spirited challenge from Selvamuthukumaran of Young Men Indian Association, Mylapore 11-5, 14-12, 5-11, 12-10, 11-13, 12-10 in the men's final of the Indian Oil 14th State-ranking table tennis tournament at the University Union Indoor Stadium here on Sunday.

Indian Bank-sponsored K. Shamini gave little leeway to J. Swarna of Medimix Chandra Academy to win 8-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-7, 11-8 and clinch her fourth women's title.

Trailing 1-2, Selvamuthukumaran frittered away a 10-6 lead to lose the fourth game. Showing fine reflexes, Selvamuthukumaran, however, fought back to win the fifth game with a fine forehand winner. Vinod, an experienced customer, survived a game point at 9-10 in the sixth and heaved a sigh of relief when Selvamuthukumaran's forehand went out at 11-10. Of the 10 tournaments Vinod has played, he has won four.
