Poet's birth centenary celebrations from Oct. 26

NEW DELHI OCT. 24. The two-day birth centenary celebrations of Kannada poet late K.V. Puttappa, popularly known as Kuvempu, will begin here in the Capital on October 26. The celebrations organised by `Dehali Kannadiga', a monthly weekly, will be inaugurated by the Karnataka Chief Minister, N.Dharam Singh, and presided over by the Union Minister of State for Planning, M.V. Rajshekharan, according to the convener of the celebrations, M.B. Samaga.

The Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman, K. Rehman Khan, and the Karnataka Revenue and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, M.P. Prakash, will also be taking part in the celebrations.

Various programmes include a seminar on Kuvempu's work, a book exhibition, a poets' meet, music, dance, drama and other cultural events will be organised. The objective of the celebration is to highlight the contribution of Kuvempu to Kannada literature.

Paintings auctioned in aid of SOS Villages

New Delhi Oct. 24. The works of prominent Indian contemporary painters went under the hammer here this evening, with M.F. Hussain's painting getting the highest bid of Rs. 2.5 lakh.

The works of over 70 eminent Indian painters, including Hussain, Satish Gural, Laxmi Pai and Sanjay Bhattacharya, were auctioned in aid of the SOS Children's Villages, fetching over Rs 18.5 lakh in aid of the villages, an organiser of the event said.

The event was organised by the SOS Children's Villages in collaboration with the Austrian Embassy, which was the venue of the auction, and Delhi Art Gallery.

Present on the occasion were a number of dignitaries, including the Ausrian Ambassador Jutta Stefan Bastl and SOS Villages International head Helmet Kutin.

The auction marked the beginning of the celebrations of 40 years of SOS Children's Villages in India.

New copyediting course

NEW DELHI OCT. 24. The School of Humanities at the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched a postgraduate certificate course in copyediting and proofreading for newcomers and professionals in copyediting.

The four-course programme is open to graduates with English as one of the subjects and a basic knowledge of computers. The four courses include introduction to editing, copyediting, language editing and manuscript preparation, conventional copyediting and also electronic copyediting and proofreading. The duration of the programme is six months.

The application forms can be obtained from the IGNOU headquarters at Maidan Garhi or from other regional centres. The last date for submission of completed application is November 30, an IGNOU release said.

Annual convention organised

NEW DELHI OCT. 24. The Business Economics Association (BEA) organised the XXXI Annual Convention at the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry here on Saturday. The topic selected for the event was "Managing upturns in the Indian economy." The annual convention provides the students of the Master of Business Economics (MBE) a platform to have a direct interaction with the industry. The Director of Institute of Economic Growth, B.B. Bhattacharya, was the chief guest on the occasion.

The programme began with the release of the annual magazine of the Department of Business Economics, "The Business Economist" followed by an inaugural speech by the Consultant of Department of Economic Affairs of the Union Finance Ministry, Ajay Shah.

The day was divided into three sessions. The sessions were titled "India in the global village" "Indian economy-opportunities and threats" and "Challenges ahead".

The Member of Parliament, Amar Singh, was the guest of honour for the day. The day ended with distribution of awards to deserving students.

Teachers to stage dharna

NEW DELHI OCT. 24. The Joint Council of Primary Teachers is organising an indefinite dharna at Town Hall from Tuesday. In a statement, the secretary general of the Joint Council, Ram Chander Dabas, said that teachers never get their salaries on time. He warned that if the problems of the teachers were not addressed, they would be forced to take some drastic steps in future.

Last date for IGNOU course

NEW DELHI OCT. 24. The last date for receipt of request for prospectus by post for the management programmes of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is November 10 and last date for submission of filled in forms is November 30.

The IGNOU's management programme consists of various degree and diploma courses. The University will be admitting students for these courses in management through an entrance test `OPENMAT-XVII'' to be held on February 6, 2005, at 120 centres across the country. Application forms and prospectus can be obtained from the IGNOU centre in Maidan Garhi or downloaded from the website, www.ignou.ac.in.

PM visits SPG Chief's home

New Delhi Oct. 24. The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, today visited the residence of Director of elite Special Protection Group P.V. Wanchoo here to pay homage to his mother Shobha Wanchoo who died yesterday.

SPG provides security cover to the Prime Minister, the former Prime Ministers and Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
