Repair bridge at Barkur

Sir, — Driving on the stretch between Shiroor and Panambur on National Highway 17 has become dangerous as lorries overloaded with ore take this road. Movement of these lorries have damaged the roads and bridges along the highway.

The bridge at Barkur has been closed for traffic since July. This has caused difficulties to the people living in the area. Moreover, for going to Mandarthi and Kokkarne, one has to take the circuitous route via Kota and Saibarkatte. Ore traffic has become a major curse to the people of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. It is time the authorities repaired the bridge.

Meter reading

Sir, — This is to draw the attention of the authorities of Mangalore Electricity Supply Company Ltd. towards the delay in reading domestic energy meters. The meter reading is supposed to be taken on the 15th of every month.

However, for the past few months, the reading is being taken on the 16th of every month, although the bill shows the previous date.

This is posing problems for the consumers.

The company should ensure that meter reading is taken on the 15th of every month itself.

Kannada teaching

Sir, — Many private colleges in the State are set to get autonomy as part of the attempt to reform higher education.

These institutions will thus get freedom to frame syllabi, evolve innovative teaching methods, conduct examinations and improve curriculum.

However, it is disheartening that some of these colleges are toying with the idea of stopping teaching of Kannada instead of trying to make the study of the language relevant to the changing world.

Although Kannada is prescribed for four semesters or two years, the curriculum framed for autonomous colleges has been cut to two semesters or a year.

The curriculum also proposes to take away the right of a student to choose Kannada as the medium to answer questions in the examination.

There is also a proposal to allow students to study any two global languages, making the learning of Kannada inessential.

The State Government should ensure that Kannada is given the status is deserves in every autonomous educational institution.
