This Day That Age
Describing the death of Mr. Rafi Ahmed Kidwai as "a loss I can hardly bear, both from personal and public points of view," Prime Minister Nehru said in a statement to the press in that far off Chinese town of Dairen: "For 35 years we worked together in the closest comradeship through ups and downs of our struggle for freedom and later as members of Government. The passing away of old comrades always brings a wrench and a sense of loneliness. Mr. Kidwai's death is an even deeper blow. During the long years of struggle and after freedom came to us, he served his country brilliantly and devotedly and none will be missed more than he will be." In a telegram to Mrs. Rafi Ahmed Kidwai, Mr. Nehru said: "I cannot tell you how deeply pained I am to learn of Rafi Ahmed's death. His personal qualities brought him a host of friends all over India. His devotion to the cause of India's freedom and progress made him a great captain and comrade of our soldiers of freedom. The whole country mourns with you his passing away."
