Pondicherry
PONDICHERRY, OCT. 25. The president of Pondicherry Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), V. Narayanasamy MP, said here today that he would soon meet the Union Health Minister, Anbumani Ramadass, to urge him to order a probe into the `irregularities' resorted to by the managements of privately-run medical colleges in Pondicherry while admitting students under the management quota during the current year. Addressing newsmen here today, Mr. Narayanasamy said the managements of the colleges had not adopted the norms stipulated by the Pondicherry Administration and the norms framed by the Admission committee. A probe was necessary, he said, to ensure that admission under the management quota was fair. Mr. Narayanasamy said he would also persuade the Medical Council of India (MCI) to examine the modalities the managements have adopted for admission of students under their quota. He said he had already written a detailed letter to the Pondicherry Health Minister, E. Valsaraj, asking for a State-level enquiry into the "style of functioning of private medical colleges here." Mr. Narayanasamy said the Pondicherry administration should also appeal against the recent verdict of the High Court of Madras fixing the quota of seats for the managements at 60 per cent of the total seats while leaving the remaining 40 per cent for Government-sponsored candidates. Mr. Narayanasamy said that in Karnataka the quota of seats for the Government had been fixed at 75 per cent, while the remaining 25 per cent only had been left to the management. The Tamil Nadu and Kerala Governments had introduced a 50-50 quota of seats between the Government and managements. Hence, he said, the Pondicherry administration should also have tried for a 50-50 system. The PCC leader said that the victory of the Congress-NCP alliance in the Maharashtra Assembly polls demonstrated the people's support. The verdict had increased the strength of the Congress, he said. The Bharatiya Janata Party, Mr. Narayanasamy said, was now on the decline, as could be seen from the Maharashtra poll results. Mr. Narayanasamy said although the BJP had often been making claims in the past that the youth would be rise to the top of the party, the assumption of charge by the former Deputy Prime Minister, L. K. Advani, showed that the BJP was not keeping its promise.
