PONDICHERRY, OCT. 25. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy will distribute Rs. 1.41-crore relief to farmers at Villianoor near here tomorrow. Agriculture Minister A. Namassivayam told newsmen here today that the assistance would be provided to 11,275 farmers who suffered losses due to heavy rains in May last. Paddy, vegetables and other crops raised on 3,597 hectares were lost. Normally, Pondicherry records an average rainfall of 345 mm during the southwest monsoon. But, this year the Union Territory recorded 239 mm in May itself. Mr. Namassivayam said that in the Karaikal region 1,154 farmers were covered under the scheme and Rs. 39 lakhs was distributed as relief. They lost gingelly and cotton crops during the rains.
