Unfortunate

Sir, — Infosys Chairman N.R. Narayana Murthy's observation that reservation in the private sector is a `wrong' thing (Oct. 24) is unfortunate. There is no convincing evidence to suggest that reservation compromises product quality. Nor was India churning out the best products in the pre-reservation era. He springs more surprise when he says reservation based on income level is acceptable.

Does he suggest that he would be comfortable compromising quality if caused by low-income group? Or, is it that only caste-based reservation will harm product quality?

S. Subahar,
Akashi, Japan

* * *

Sir, — Reservation was introduced to give adequate opportunities to the downtrodden to join the mainstream. But its benefits have not reached the deserving and the needy. Expansion of reservation will not help in such circumstances.

T.N. Surendranath,
Kozhikode, Kerala
