NEW DELHI, OCT. 25. The Centre today informed the Supreme Court that it had transferred P.C. Pandey, Additional Director, Central Bureau of Investigation, to an equivalent post in the Union Home Ministry. The Solicitor-General, G.E. Vahanvati, gave this information to a Bench, comprising Justice Ruma Pal and Justice C.K. Thakker, hearing a public interest litigation petition filed by the Citizens for Justice and Peace challenging Mr. Pandey's appointment in view of his alleged role in the Gujarat riots as the then Ahmedabad Police Commissioner. Recording the Solicitor-General's submission, the Bench disposed of the petition. The petitioner did not press its another prayer seeking an inquiry into Mr. Pandey's alleged role in the riots. Belonging to the Gujarat cadre of the 1970 batch of the Indian Police Service (IPS), Mr. Pandey is yet to be promoted to the rank of the Director-General of Police. He joined the CBI as Additional Director on March 3 this year. Sources said that Mr. Pandey would most probably get a lateral transfer to a Central Police Organisation.
