CHENNAI, OCT. 25. The Melaka Institute of Biotechnology, in the State of Melaka, Malaysia, is seeking partners for research and development (R & D) projects and proposals in focus areas, including essential oils, according to Ali Mohd Rustam, Chief Minister. The focus areas of the institute include agrobiotechnology, food technology, environmental biotechnology and biotechnology of medicinal plants. It is also interested in procuring the services of a certification agency for biotechnology products, Mr. Ali Mohd Rustam said here recently. A commercial outfit, called the Melaka Biotechnology Holdings Sdn Bhd, had been promoted to seek local and foreign investments and technology transfers in biotechnology and life sciences. It would cover extraction of essential oils, micropropagation of medicinal and ornamental plants and orchids, biofertilizers, production of value added crops, industrial enzymes, vaccine production and nutraceuticals. Essential oils were even used in manufacturing security paper, the Chief Minister said. Mr. Ali Mohd Rustam, who addressed a press conference and later a gathering of businessmen and the tourism trade as a part of the Third India-ASEAN Business Summit organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), said Melaka was interested in cooperation with India in particular in the areas of ICT (information and communication technology), biotechnology, machine tools and tourism. He expressed concern over the fact that only 3 per cent of Indian tourists visiting Malaysia came to Melaka, despite the attractive destinations that the State offered. Memoranda of understanding were signed on the occasion by a Malaysian tourism company with two of its counterparts in Chennai and Mumbai to promote tourist traffic to Melaka. Seri Rehman Maidin, President, Malay Chamber of Commerce, said Malaysia was interested in participating in housing construction in India.
