DEHRA DUN, OCT. 25. The Forest Research Institute here will observe the platinum jubilee of its sprawling Greco-Roman style building on November 7 and 8. Announcing this today, the Director-General of the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education, R.P.S. Katwal, said that a grand exhibition of photographs depicting the various moods of this building spread over an estate of 1200 acres and having a plinth area of seven acres over the past 75 years would be a major attraction for visitors. Besides this an interaction workshop between the scientists and stakeholders of forests produce would be held to understand the needs and difficulties of the people. The majestic building was inaugurated by the Viceroy of India, Lord Irvin, on November 7, 1929. Over the years it has acted as a centre for research in forestry and allied fields. The research tempo has, however, gone down over the decades calling for a fresh need-oriented mandate. "Even Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had wanted the Institute to explore new areas of pursuit as much had been done during the British period itself. Unfortunately, nothing has changed. We continue to be a white elephant performing meagre testing jobs including a few from abroad or routine jobs. Only a positive direction from the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, himself can rejuvenate this institute to perform as a vibrant partner in the strategic forestry and forest produce markets," observed N.N. Sharma, a retired scientist.
