Sheila urges Sonia to prevent politicisation of industry issue

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, OCT. 25. Indicating a change of equations and a parting of ways with her one-time close confidante Ajay Maken, now the Member of Parliament from New Delhi, the Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, is understood to have written to the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, seeking an end to "politicisation of the closure of industries issue'' by "various quarters''.

She has sought Ms. Gandhi's intervention in finding a solution to the problem including notification of the Master Plan of Delhi by the Central Government which has been pending for a long time now.

According to sources in the Delhi Government, Ms. Dikshit has addressed the same letter to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, also. Along with the letter, Ms. Dikshit has enclosed a ready reference note on the relocation of industries in Delhi for Ms. Gandhi and Mr. Singh.

Pleading helplessness over the situation and stating that the Delhi Government was doing its best under the given situation, Ms. Dikshit said: "I would like to reiterate, and with emphasis, that the Delhi Government is handling a situation wherein it has no control either over land or the Master Plan of Delhi policy (issues which are within the purview of the Delhi Development Authority and the Ministry of Urban Development) nor over regularisation per se. It is working within the strict confines of the directions of the Supreme Court on the one hand and on the other the welfare and concerns of the industrial workers and entrepreneurs. And it does not help that the situation is being politicised from and by various quarters''.

Further Ms. Dikshit stated that she has sought a meeting with the Union Urban Development Minister to try and resolve the issue before the Government approaches the Supreme Court.

"We implore you to help us out at this critical juncture so that we can present to the Supreme Court a credible plan of action with the support of the Union Government,'' it concludes.

In the note attached with the letter, the Chief Minister, without making any direct reference to Mr. Maken, has stated that apart from the protests and coverage in the media, there is even a letter from one of the "our sitting Members of Parliament from Delhi'' apparently giving `one side' of the arguments in favour of the industries. It states that the Delhi Government would like to impress upon the Union Government to take up the pending issues of expediting handing over of land to Delhi Government, early notification of Master Plan of Delhi 2021 or at least its draft and to consider the proposal for in-situ regularisation of industries as soon as the survey report, expected to be submitted in three month time, comes.
