NEW DELHI, OCT. 25. Lauding SOS India's efforts and mission of childcare, film star Shabana Azmi today emphasised the role of volunteers and other goodwill ambassadors in spreading awareness and reaching out to children.

Speaking on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of SOS Children's Village of India in the presence of its President and the organisation's founder, J.N. Kaul, and the President of SOS Kinderdorf International, Helmut Kutien, at India Habitat Centre here, Ms. Azmi urged the people to come forward and support the SOS movement.

"Many people in India are unaware of the philanthropic needs and means of helping a needy," said Ms. Azmi, who was appointed the first goodwill ambassador of SOS in India and fourth in the world.

On the occasion, she was presented with the SOS volunteer kit "Yeh Dosti Zindagi Bhar Ki" in an initiative to raise funds for homeless children.

SOS Children's Village was first established in 1964 at Greenfields in Faridabad. Today this village has 194 children living in 20 family homes. The objective of the organisation is to help orphaned and abandoned children by providing them with a family, permanent home, education and a strong foundation for a secured life.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Kaul said: "Through this association we have been able to reach out to many children and we continue to look for people's help and support to strengthen the cause." SOS Children's Villages of India is a part of the worldwide SOS Children's movement under the umbrella organisation, SOS Kinderdorf International. SOS-India constitutes the largest operation in this worldwide movement which is spread over 131 countries. The president of SOS International, Mr. Kutien congratulated Mr. Kaul and said: "SOS has given every child a possibility to become a good human being." He said with international support SOS in Srinagar would soon become a reality. A short film highlighting the achievements of the organisation was also screened.
