NEW DELHI, OCT. 25. With Monday marking the last day for withdrawal of nominations to the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) elections, the battle lines have been drawn for the much awaited event, with most student outfits here announcing their final four for the big contest. A mix of some old and new names, the Students' Federation of India (SFI), which swept the polls last year, has this year selected Parimal Maya Sudhakar -- JNUSU vice-president in 2002-2003 -- as its presidential candidate. Giving him competition from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad will be Dhananjay Singh, a student of the School of Languages, and Narasimha Moorty of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI). The outgoing JNUSU vice-president, Ena Panda, will once again contest for the post of vice-president from the SFI, while Muqbil Ahmar and Shona Mitra will fight for the post of general secretary and joint secretary. Both Muqbil and Shona are outgoing councillors from the School of Social Sciences. Fought on the ideological battleground, the SFI believes the focal issue to be raised by it this year would be more financial assistance to M.Phil and Ph.D students, more support for those coming from needy sections and special provision for those from deprived sections. Hoping to recover lost ground will be the ABVP, which pointed out that by selecting its candidates from different schools it has tried to represent all sections of the students. Contesting on the vice-president's post will be Ankita Bhattacharjee, an M.Phil student from School of International Studies (SIS), while fighting for the post of general secretary will be Pratish Sahu from the School of Social Sciences, and Manoj Pant from the School of Environmental Sciences for the post of joint secretary. It may have faced a bitter loss last year, but the ABVP believes things have improved. On test this year will also be the NSUI, which is yet to make a mark on this campus. Buoyed by last year's marginal improvement in its record here, the NSUI will this year be hoping to make that much needed breakthrough. Contesting on the vice-president's post will be SIS student, Aleem Ullah, while fighting the general secretary's post will be Preeti Rekha, a student of School of Languages, with Prashant Kumar Singh from the School of Social Sciences taking up the responsibility of joint secretary.
