NEW DELHI, OCT. 25. A senior journalist and executive member of the Press Club of India and his neighbour were allegedly assaulted by an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of the Delhi police and locked-up at Rajouri Garden police station. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident. As per the complaint, Narendra Bhalla and his wife had gone looking for their son, who had gone to participate in a nearby Ramlila at Subhash Nagar in West Delhi, around midnight on October 20. On his way, he met his neighbour Vimal Seth, whose two children had also not returned from the Ramlila. At the Ramlila ground they came to know that their children had fought with each other. This led to a minor altercation between the two families, but soon the matter was resolved. In the meantime, ASI R.P. Singh and some constables came there and accused them of creating a scene. When Mr. Bhalla denied any such thing, the ASI allegedly became abusive. Mr. Bhalla called up the police post in charge and got the ASI to talk to him. The matter seemed to have been sorted out for the moment. But, as the two families were returning, the ASI and Constable Naresh Kumar caught Mr. Bhalla and Mr. Seth and took them to the area police post. There, the ASI allegedly beat up the two. Mr. Bhalla also alleged that he was not allowed to contact his family. The ASI booked the two under preventive sections of the Criminal Procedure Code. They were released in the afternoon the next day. Today, a delegation of the Press Club of India met the Police Commissioner, K.K. Paul, who ordered an inquiry into the incident and asked for the report within 24 hours.
