MYSORE, OCT. 27. The former Minister, H. Vishwanath, here today reiterated his demand that the Government take over Sri Krishna Temple in Udupi and appoint a chief executive officer to supervise the temple affairs. He was speaking at a seminar on `Kanaka then and now,' organised by the Karnataka State Backward Classes Welfare Forum. He said that the State Government should also not withdraw the gazette notification that had included Sri Krishna Temple under the Karnataka Religious Endowments Act. Mr. Vishwanath said that several courts had ruled that the temple did not belong to the Ashta Maths, but was a place of worship for the public. He said: "The pontiffs had requested the Government to remove the temple from the purview of the Act. The Advocate-General has also given his legal opinion to denotify the temple. Since the request is pending, the Government should not withdraw the gazette notification."
Legal action
He threatened to initiate legal action if the Government denotified the temple. Mr. Vishwanath announced that a Janandolana meeting had been convened in Shimoga on October 30 where legal documents pertaining to the temple would be placed before the public. The future course of action would be decided after consulting various organisations and individuals, he said. "My demand is imperative in the light of demolition of Kanaka Gopura on the temple premises and it has not been made on caste lines. The struggle initiated is also not against any math or pontiff," Mr. Vishwanath clarified.
Meeting with seer
Mr. Vishwanath will meet the Pejwar Math Swamiji, Vishvesha Tirtha, in Bangalore on October 29 to exchange views on the controversy over the demolition of Kanaka Gopura. Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Vishwanath said: "the pontiff wanted to meet me for a discussion on the issue, and I will be meeting him in Bangalore."
