Soil mapping for all districts
Speaking after inaugurating the 69th annual convention of Indian Society of Soil Sciences at Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University here on Wednesday, Mr. Reddy said the Government was seeking financial assistance of Rs. 30 crores to meet the cost of the proposed project from the FAO. He said a team was sent to Netherlands to undergo training in different kinds of soil research activities so as to obtain soil reference information. The mapping would be in a scale of 1:25,000 meters, he added.
Anganwadi workers
seek fair deal
While welcoming the State Government's decision to pay salary to anganwadi workers every month and to increase their wages, B. Lalitamma, president, and P. Roja, secretary, said in a statement that the proposed hike of Rs.100 was inadequate. The wanted the Government to create promotional avenues and job security to anganwadi workers. They said selection for anganwadi jobs should be done only by the committees headed by district collectors.

held in Vijayawada
Issues such as legislation to prevent domestic violence, strict implementation of the Supreme Court directive on curbing sexual harassment of women at work place, earmarking 50 per cent of work under the employment guarantee scheme would come up for discussion. They said the problems concerning women should be treated as societal issues and every effort made to redress them. They decried the increasing atrocities on women.
DYFI plans `Chalo Delhi'
The committee leaders -- M. Balaji, P.V. Srinivas and M. Chandramohan -- said in a statement here on Wednesday that the DYFI would collect one crore signatures and submit a representation to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, in Delhi on the demands. They wanted the Congress to honour its pre-election promises on creation of employment avenues for youth. They asked the State Government to fill the 2.5 lakh vacant posts in various departments and to sanction loans to all eligible persons under the Rajiv Yuva Shakti Scheme.
Teachers stage dharna
Among the main demands of the teachers are formation of combined service rules, implementation of the agreements the Government had reached in the past with the teachers associations, removal of budget control on the teachers working in the municipal corporations and municipalities and implementation of GO No. 62. The teachers also wanted the Collector to review his order that all Government servants should stay at their place of work.
Ministers gheraoed
The Ministers were detained for 15 minutes by the protesters and relented only after the Ministers promised to take their issues to the notice of the Government.
Trains' halt
Drought relief urged
In a resolution, the party said no relief had reached villages so far. The severity of drought was increasing and already 30 persons died in Medak district, it said. There were also starvation deaths in Mahabubnagar, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Anantapur and Kurnool districts, it alleged.
Four women beaten up
According to the police, one Veeraswamy's daughter B. Laxmi Prasanna (12) died recently due to illness. The parents accused B. Narasamma of practising witchcraft and held her responsible for the death of Prasanna. Last night, a group of people forcibly taken Narasamma and her associates -- Neelamma, Chinna Neelamma and Sammaka. They were tied to a police and were beaten up severely before letting off in the midnight. On Wednesday, again they were summoned to Veeraswamy's house. Apprehending danger, Narasamma jumped into well in a bid to commit suicide. However, she was rescued by the local people.
Rain lashes Kavali
The rain was isolated in coastal Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema during the 24-hour period ending Wednesday morning. Night temperatures remained static at a number of places in the State. Arogyavaram and Hyderabad recorded the State's lowest night temperature for the period at 19 degree Celsius. According to a forecast, isolated rain will continue in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema on Thursday also. Weather will be mainly dry in Telangana.
Prisoner escapes
According to sources, the prisoner, a native of Somaregadi thanda in Kammarpally mandal, who had been serving a five-year sentence since June 6, 2003, escaped when he was brought out of the barrack for gardening work at around 3.30 p.m. The police launched an intensive search operation to nab him.

show
Vegetables, fruits, flowers, medicinal and aromatic crops cultivated in Karimnagar district will be on display at the show. The show will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., according to a press note.

CJ's visit
They will arrive in Vemulawada temple town and perform puja in the morning. On Saturday morning, they will again perform puja at the temple shrine and later proceed to Sircilla town to participate in the inauguration of the senior civil judges court buildings, according to a note issued by the district judge, M.V.S Krishnaji Rao.

Permits for
sand lifting
The permits to lift sand could be given for sand quarries at Peddaputha in Vallur mandal, Chinnadandlur in Yerraguntla mandal, Narayana Nellore in Penagalur mandal and Pedda Dandlur in Jammalamadugu mandal as per the directives issued by the District-Level Sand Committee Chairman, he said in a statement.
