LIC agent assaulted?

By Our Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA, OCT.27. The `non-cooperation' agitation of the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) development officers reached a climax here on Wednesday, with one of them allegedly assaulting an agent at the Jeevan Krishna branch.

Trouble started when a development officer tried to stop an agent at the branch from making a `new business deposit'. Other agents who were present took up cudgels on behalf of their colleague and egged the agent to go ahead and make the payment. An argument ensued between the development officer and the agent and the former reportedly lost his cool and assaulted the agent.

Stir enters 45th day

There has been tension in the LIC offices for the past one month with development officers preventing agents from making new business deposits. The development officers are agitating for the past 45 days protesting against the recent slash in annual incentives and other allowances.

According to the agents, the non-cooperation of the development officers was costing LIC dearly. In Machilipatnam division that covers Krishna and Guntur districts, there was a loss of over Rs. 30 crores in this period. The division has fallen short of its target by 6,000 policies, a sum assured amount of Rs. 30 crores and premium of Rs. 20 lakhs. There are 256 development officers in the division and 13, 058 agents working under them.

The number of agents recruited was also less than what it was in the corresponding period last year.
