Pathologists' meet from today

Bangalore Oct. 28. The Department of Pathology of the Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Whitefield, near here, is hosting the 32nd annual conference of the Karnataka Chapter of Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists between October 29 and 31. Some 250 delegates from across the State are expected to participate in the deliberations. As part of the main event, a pre-conference workshop has been arranged on Friday to discuss current developments in laboratory practice. Recent advances and their applications will be discussed by speakers and specialists from Hyderabad, Pondicherry, and Vellore, besides those from Bangalore. Advances in the fields of cytology, immunology, clinical chemistry and haematology, which will be of practical utility to pathologists, will be discussed in greater detail. Special programmes such as audiovisual seminars and a competitive quiz programme will be part of the proceedings. For further details R.N. Report on tree fall submitted

BANGALORE OCT. 28. Yellappa Reddy, environmentalist, on Wednesday submitted a report on falling of trees in Bangalore city limits to the Mayor, P.R. Ramesh. A large number of trees were uprooted in the city because of heavy rain and winds during the monsoon. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) had requested the panel headed by Dr. Reddy to study the reasons for the falling of trees in the city and submit a report. Dr. Reddy held several rounds of discussions with officials of the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company, Bangalore Sanchar Nigam Ltd., Bangalore Water Sewerage and Supply Board, and other department officials and prepared the report, according to a press release from the BMP. The BMP Commissioner, K. Jothiramalingam, the Chief Horticultural Officer, Narayanswamy, and the former MLA and advocate K.N. Subba Reddy were present during submission of the report.

II PU exam. timetable notified

BANGALORE Oct. 28. The Department of Pre-University Education has notified the timetable for the second year pre-university annual examination to be held in March/April 2005. Those having any objection to the proposed timetable can contact the Director of the department on or before November 20. A final timetable will be issued after considering the objections. According to the proposed timetable, the examination in Chemistry, Logic and Education-I will be held on March 28; English on March 29; History and Computer Science on March 30, Business Studies, Botany and Optional Kannada on March 31; Zoology, Geography and Statistics on April 1; Political Science and Home Science on April 2; Economics, Electronics and Geology on April 4; Mathematics, Business Maths and Psychology on April 5; Accountancy, Education-II, Carnatic Music and Hindustani Music on April 6; Physics and Sociology on April 7; Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, Marathi, Arabic and French on April 8; and Hindi, Telugu, Urdu and Sanskrit on April 11.

Navodaya School sanctioned

GULBARGA Oct. 28. The Centre has sanctioned one more Navodaya School to Gulbarga district under the scheme to bestow more attention on development aspects in the backward districts in the country.

According to the Deputy Commissioner, Anjum Parvez, the Centre had sanctioned additional Navodaya schools in different parts of the country identified as backward regions. At present, the Navodaya School sanctioned long ago to Gulbarga district was functioning at Hothspet in Shahapur taluk and the new school would be located in a suitable centre. The district administration would identify at least four locations for the new school and leave the final choice of location to the Centre.

Preparations complete for polls

Belgaum Oct. 28. Preparations for the polling to elect the president for the State and district unit of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat on October 31 are almost complete. Steps have been taken to ensure that the polling is free and fair, according to the tahsildar and assistant returning officer, G.C. Miranda. In a statement here today, he said that the electorate in Belgaum district was 2,048.

Seven polling stations would be set up at the tahsildars' offices in major centres such as Belgaum (for Belgaum and Khanapur taluks), Chikkodi (Chikkodi and Hukkeri), Saundatti (Saundatti and Ramdurg), Bailhongal, Raibag, Athani, and Gokak. The polling will be held between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Entries for journalism award

MANGALORE OCT. 28. P. Gopalakrishna Memorial Trust here has invited entries for P. Gopalakrishna Memorial Rural Reporting Award - 2004. According to a press release, working journalists from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Chikmagalur, Kodagu, and Kasaragod (Kerala) districts are eligible to apply. Two independent reports in Kannada published between November 1, 2003 and October 31, 2004 in any Kannada daily, magazine or other periodicals will be considered for the award. The original cutting of the write-up and a photocopy of the same should be sent. A photocopy of the published material and translated articles will not be considered.

Those who have already received this award are not eligible to apply. The award comprises a purse of Rs. 2,001 and a certificate. The entries should reach U. Narasimha Rao, trust president, Karangalpaddy Cross Road, Mangalore 575 003 on or before November 30, 2004.

`Lift foodgrains'

DAVANGERE OCT. 28. The Deputy Commissioner, M.S. Ravishankar, has directed the implementing officers to lift the foodgrains released under the food-for-work programme by next week and complete the drought relief works.

Reviewing the drought relief works here on Wednesday, Mr. Ravishankar instructed the officers to complete the works taken up in the seventh phase by December 15 and submit the "completion report."

He also cautioned officers of stringent action if they failed to carry out quality work within the stipulated time.

Suspended

Chitradurga Oct. 28. The chief librarian of the Chitradurga Central Library, V.B. Patil, has been kept under suspension on charges of unauthorised absence and dereliction of duty.

M.A. Sadiq, former Deputy Commissioner, in a surprise visit to the library had noticed the unauthorised absence of Mr. Patil.

He also found that the library was not maintained properly.

A committee was appointed to look into the matter.

After receiving the report, Mr. Sadiq had recommended Mr. Patil's suspension to the Government.

Acting on the recommendation, the Government suspended him from service, official sources said.

Delhi chalo

HASSAN OCT. 28. Nearly 100 members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) will participate in the "Delhi chalo" programme, which is being organised to mark its silver jubilee year, the vice-president of DYFI's district unit, Shavel Hameed, has said.

In a release here on Thursday, he said that nearly 5,000 workers would participate in the programme from the State and a memorandum signed by nearly two crore members would be submitted to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh.

The programme had been organised to urge the Government to provide employment opportunities, lift the ban on recruitment, implement a national youth and sports policy, and continue the rural weightage scheme.
