Veerappan's killing

Sir, — Veerappan, the most wanted outlaw, was killed in an encounter by the STF. It was certainly no mean task. The operation involved enormous risk. In such as situation, it is shocking that rights activists from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka are talking to villagers to find out whether the encounter was fake or not. It is time they engaged in more fruitful activities.

Sir, — It is not fair to raise the question why Veerappan was not captured alive. Many things are easier said than done.

Sir, — A 55-year-old woman from Mettur has reportedly told the activists on a fact-finding mission that her family of seven was wiped out by Veerappan 17 years ago on the suspicion that they were police informers. One hopes the media that highlighted the plight of Veerappan's wife and children will investigate the trauma the families of his victims have undergone, unnoticed.

Sir, — One wonders what purpose is going to be served by the probe undertaken by the rights groups. Veerappan was an outlaw and the STF had a mandate to get him either dead or alive. It has done that.

Sir, — The argument that rights activists should not raise questions about the authenticity of the encounter is unacceptable.

It is also not proper to argue that similar noises were not made when Veerappan killed police and forest officials, and H. Nagappa.

A criminal does not respect human rights. But enforcers of the law are expected to behave better.

Gingee, T.N.

Sir, — The largesse showered on the STF team by the Tamil Nadu Government seems to have been done impulsively. The STF has only done the assigned task, that too after 10 years. The exchequer should not be drained in this way.

M. Rajaraman,
Pondicherry
