Nobel for Hemingway

This year's Nobel Prize for Literature, worth the record sum of 181,646 crowns (about £12,500) has been awarded to the American novelist, Ernest Hemingway. The award, as on all previous occasions in its 53 years, was made on behalf of the Nobel Foundation by the Swedish Academy of Literature. The 18 members of the Academy had been torn between Hemingway and the Icelandic ex-Communist author, Hallrod Kilian Laxnes. Academicians had hinted that they were as much afraid of Hemingway's unconventionalism as Laxnes's strong Left-wing political views. The announcement said the Nobel Prize went to Hemingway for his vigorous art and the influence of his style on the literary art of our times, as manifested recently in his book, "The old man and the sea," which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize last year. Born on June 12, 1894 in the suburbs of Chicago, son of a doctor, Hemingway left school at 15 and became a dish washer in a restaurant. At the age of 17 he returned to his family and learnt journalism. The best known among his novels are "A farewell to arms," "To have and have not" and "For whom the bell tolls." He has been married four times. Hemingway recently had a miraculous escape when the plane in which he was travelling crashlanded in Uganda. He was picked up and got into another plane which also crashed and was burnt.
