Kudumbasree to enter bakery business

By Our Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE, OCT. 28. Kudumbasree is making a foray into state-of-the-art bakery business to keep pace with contemporary customer demands.

Ten women of a Kudumbasree activity group in Cheruvannur-Nallalam grama panchayat in Kozhikode district will undergo an 11-day training in food production and marketing. This is to cater to the growing demand for pizzas, exotic breads and cakes.

This is the first time that Kudumbasree is taking up such an activity in the State. The new venture is expected to be followed up in other districts too.

After venturing into traditional areas of business such as pickles, pappads and masala powder production, the foray into baked goods has been described as a new venture in self reliance.

The Kudumbasree district coordinator K. Subhash Babu said the training programme is being conducted under the aegis of the Holy Cross Institute of Hotel Management. The training fee of Rs. 2,000 a person will be provided by Kudumbasree.

He said that hands-on-training will equip the women to produce baked goods using gas and electricity, compared with traditional methods used by them so far.

Sister Shiny who is in charge of the course said besides production and marketing, personality development, team work, motivation, accounting, health and hygiene and yoga will be part of the curriculum. The objective is to market a product of quality prepared under hygienic conditions.

Both the agencies will assist the women to run the unit effectively. The venture will call for higher investment too. Banks such as Canara Bank and Federal Bank will be approached for providing finance.

Industrial sheds that were built under the People's Plan Programme to provide self-employment units for women and that are lying vacant will be used for setting up the bakery units.

Requests have come from Ramanattukara, Peruvayal, Perumanna and Narikuni panchayats for similar training Mr. Subhash Babu added.

The District Collector Rachna Shah, MLA T. P. M. Saheer, and Kudumbasree Regional Director M. Janardhanan will participate in the inauguration of the Kudumbasree Women Entrepreneurship Training Programme here on October 29.
