Remand extended
SALEM OCT. 28. The remand for the Tamil Liberation Army leader, Suba. Ilavarasan, who was arrested with arms at Palar near Mettur a few months ago, was extended by the Mettur judicial magistrate-I. The police said Ilavarasan, lodged in the Chennai Central prison, was brought to the court this morning amidst tight security.
Life sentence for infanticide
SALEM OCT. 28. The Salem district principal sessions judge, A.J. Muruganandam, yesterday sentenced to life term a 23-year-old woman on the charge of killing her two-day-old female infant. According to prosecution, Suguna, wife of Sakthivel of Bodinaickenpatti Valasu, near Edapadi, allegedly administered `madar' poison, known as `Erukkam' flower in Tamil, to her second daughter. Mr. Muruganandam also slapped a fine of Rs. 1,000 on the woman. Mr. Muruganandam earlier sentenced a husband and wife of Theevattipatti to life for killing their two-day-old female child by feeding it with salt water.
3 die in roof collapse
Nagercoil Oct. 28. Three women employees of a cashew nut unit at Kunnathur, near Kappicadu, under the Pudukadai police limits, were killed and 11 others injured when the roof of a shed collapsed and fell on them yesterday. According to police, Ammukutty (50) of Kodunkulam and Sumi alias Sumathi (40) died on the spot. Kamalam (43) of Kalpavilai, who was seriously injured, died in the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College hospital.
Fire in house, 2 killed
Nagercoil Oct. 28. T wo persons were killed and one was injured in a fire in their house at Vazavilai in this district early today. According to the police, Thaju (27), David (20) and Raj (22), sons of Chinnathampi, were asleep when the fire broke out. Thaju and David succumbed to their injuries in the Asaripallam Government College Hospital.
Orientation course
CHENNAI OCT. 28. The UGC-Academic Staff College, Bharathiyar University, Coimbatore, is organising an orientation course in value-based education and a refresher course in commerce from November 2. Refresher courses in information technology, economics and history will also be conducted from November 9, according to a release.
Workshop on eco-audit
CHENNAI OCT. 28. The Max Mueller Bhavan is organising a two-day workshop on `Eco-audit - A process towards environmental awareness' on November 5 and 6 at Vanavani Matriculation Higher Secondary School, IIT, Chennai. The workshop, aimed at creating environmental awareness through teaching, is inspired by the eco-audit programme in Germany. Two experts from that country, Georg Burneier and Ralf Laubert, and three from the C.P.R. Environmental Education Foundation, will be among the resource persons, says a release.
IA flights rescheduled
CHENNAI OCT. 28. Indian Airlines has rescheduled certain flights in its winter schedule, effective October 31. The daily morning flight (IC-945) from Chennai to Hyderabad will depart at 8 a.m. (instead of 9-35 a.m.) and reach Hyderabad at 9 a.m. The return flight (IC-946) will leave at 9-40 a.m. and arrive here at 10-40 a.m. The service (IC-931) from Chennai to Thiruvananthapuram will leave at 9-40 a.m. on all days except on Friday and reach Thiruvananthapuram at 10-50 a.m. In the return direction, the flight (IC-932) will depart at 3-50 p.m. and arrive here at 5 p.m. On Fridays, this service will leave Chennai at 8-10 a.m. and reach Thiruvananthapuram at 9-20 a.m. In the return direction, it will depart at 2-30 p.m. on Fridays and arrive here at 3-40 p.m, says a release.
`Iftar, not a social get-together'
CHENNAI OCT. 27. `Iftar' (breaking of fast) during Ramzan is an obligatory and solemn occasion to Muslims, and not a social get-together, the Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, said. He was speaking at an `Iftar' party organised by a Muslim organisation here. Ramzan is a sacred month of divine blessings. It is a month of prayers, fasting, peace, perseverance, forgiveness and sacrifice and it should not be politicised at any level, he said. Syed Rabbani, convener, welcomed the gathering. Mohamed Rahmathullah spoke on the significance of fasting during Ramzan.
14 rescued from bondage
Kancheepuram Oct. 28. The Revenue department has rescued 14 bonded labourers, including a few children, from a rice mill at Kolapakkam near Mangadu. According to the police, senior officials, during a visit to the mill on Tuesday, found 14 persons, including a few children, working as bonded labourers there. However, there were two versions on relief measures. While a section of officials claimed that the rescued labourers were lodged in an orphanage at Paranthur near Kancheepuram, another section said they were `released' at their native place, Meiyur near Wallajabad.
Rain in Erode
ERODE OCT. 28. Erode and its surrounding areas experienced heavy rain last evening. Erode recorded 24 mm of rain, Perundurai 12 mm, Gobi 3 mm. The level of the Lower Bhavani Project reservoir also improved due to rain in the catchment areas. The level of the reservoir is 81.05 feet against the full level of 120 feet, inflow 1833 cusecs, discharge 1300 cusecs.
Kerosene seized
Dharmapuri Oct. 28. A hotelier was arrested for storing 235 litres of kerosene meant for supply in public distribution outlets at Harur here yesterday. According to official sources, a team was conducting raids in Harur when they found Chellamuthu keeping 235 litres of kerosene in his hotel. Officials suspect that Chellamuthu might have bought the kerosene at a subsidised rate for sale in the open market. He was arrested and the kerosene seized. Harur police are investigating.
Killed
Krishnagiri Oct. 28. A 23-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run road accident at Berigai here yesterday. According to the police, Chandran of Berigai was returning on his motorcycle from Melur when an unidentified vehicle hit him and sped away. He died on the spot. Police have registered a case.
Collector appeal
Tuticorn Oct.28. The Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, today appealed to residents of Kovilpatti to bear with temporary inconveniences caused to them, owing to construction of the railway overbridges inside the town limits. The appeal came in the wake of a series of agitations by political parties and trade unions at Kovilapatti recently, protesting the authorities' decision to re-chart routes of some of the long distance buses without allowing them to enter the old bus stand. According to sources, the Kovilpatti municipal council meeting today passed a resolution in favour of the district administration's decision to route the long distance bound public transport buses through the bypass till the construction of the flyovers was over.
Local holiday
Nagercoil Oct.28. The district administration has declared local holiday on November 1 in view of Kanyakumari district merging with Tamil Nadu the same day on 1956. The Collector, Rajesh Lakhoni, said in a release that December 11 would be a working day.
Demonstration
Tuticorin Oct.28. Members owing allegiance to various employees unions of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited today staged a demonstration in front of the BSNL General Manager's office here, urging the Government to curtail an "unethical" business practice being adopted by a private company in the telecom sector.
Sales target fixed
NAGAPATTINAM OCT.28. The Tamil Nadu Handloom Weavers Co-operative Society has proposed to sell handloom goods worth Rs.5.50 crores through Cooptex during Deepavali and Ramzan in the Cuddalore region comprising the revenue districts of Cuddalore, Villupuram, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and the Union Territory of Pondicherry, said R. Natanasabapathy, Regional Manager of the Cooptex, here today. The Collector, M. Veera Shanmugha Moni, inaugurated the special discount sale at the Cooptex showroom here today. Mr. Natanasabapathy said that the Cuddalore region had sold handloom clothes worth Rs.4.13 crores last year and a sales target of Rs.5.50 crores was fixed for this year's Deepavali and Ramzan.

Thanjavur Oct. 28 . The Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, has stressed the need to create an awareness of the security offered by insurance schemes. Participating in the social security month celebrations at the Thanjavur division of Life Insurance Corporation of India here today, he distributed cheques to five persons under Jana Beema Yojana and scholarships to children of self-help groups. M. R. Balakrishnan, Senior Divisional Manager, LIC, Thanjavur division, spoke. V. Subramanyam, Senior Marketing Manager, M.Valayapthi, lead district manager, were present.
Free eye camp
Thanjavur Oct. 28. Eyes of 460 persons were tested at a free camp organised by the Lions Club of Swamimalai and Madurai Aravind Hospital at Swamimalai recently. S. Swaminathan, assistant governor, Lions Club, inaugurated the camp. R. Kanakasabai, president, Swamimalai Lions Club, presided. Secretary of the club, Srikanta Sthapathi, welcomed the gathering. Fifty-one persons who have cataract were taken to Madurai for surgery. People from 28 villages around Swamimalai participated in the camp.

Tiruchi Oct.28. The water level at the Mettur reservoir stood at 89.21 feet today. The inflow was 7,309 cusecs and the discharge 500 cusecs.
