Supreme Court bench

Sir, — I refer to the editorial, "Supreme Court and regionalisation" (Oct. 26). True, the risks involved in setting up regional branches of the apex court outweigh the benefits. But the demand for regionalisation stems from the need of people to have easier access to the Supreme Court. If regionalisation is not desirable, we must promote legal aid by creating a special cell for the specific purpose of providing access.

Sumit Garg,
Kurukshetra, Haryana

Sir, — An integrated judiciary is one of the most prominent symbols of a distinct feature of our Constitution — federation with a unitary bias. The argument that regional benches will save litigation expense has little merit as only the very rich approach the highest court.

C.P. Srinivasan,
Chennai
