CUDDAPAH, OCT. 29. Swift action by the police led to the nabbing of a five-member gang from Maharashtra and recovery of 2.30 kg of gold jewellery worth about Rs. 13 lakhs within a couple of hours of a suitcase-snatching incident from a bus in Rayachoti bus stand on Friday.
Swift action
The gang members - Babu Devaraj Yadav, Bhamji Bheemrao Jadhav, Ashok Rane Pawar, Subhash Dasarath Singh and Bhagawat Pawar - all of Singavedi in Mada taluk, Sholapur district of Maharashtra, who were fleeing in an RTC bus after stealing a suitcase containing the gold jewellery, were arrested by the Ramapuram Sub-Inspector, Ramakrishnudu, and staff, the Superintendent of Police, V.C. Explaining the sequence of events, the SP said a gold trader of Nellore, Chinna Kesavulu, brought 3 kg. of gold jewellery in a suitcase to Rayachoti and sold 700 gm. to local gold merchants today. He boarded a bus bound for Piler at Rayachoti bus stand, but left the suitcase in it and went to place his handkerchief in an express bus headed for Chennai, hoping to reach his destination faster. All the police stations in the district were alerted on the gold theft and intensive vehicle checking was taken up immediately on his initiative, Mr. Sajjanar explained. The Ramapuram SI and staff intercepted an RTC bus going from Madanapalle to Cuddapah and found a suitcase under a seat, which had no claimants. Suspecting five non-Telugu speaking persons, the SI took them into custody and recovered the suitcase containing the stolen gold.
Confess to theft
The accused confessed to the theft, the SP said and added that the suitcase recovered contained 2.30 kg. of gold stolen from Chinna Kesavulu. Thanking the police for expeditious recovery of the stolen gold, Chinna Kesavulu gave them a reward of Rs. 10,000. Lauding the police for the swift action leading to the seizure, the SP announced rewards to the police officials and personnel concerned. The Pulivendula DSP, K. Purushotham, Rayachoti Urban circle inspector, Harinatha Babu, and Ramapuram SI, Ramakrishnudu, and staff were also present.
