Rail traffic hit as train derails

HUBLI Oct. 29. The movement of trains between Londa and Castlerock on Londa-Vascodagama section of the Hubli division of the South Western Railway was affected after a goods train derailed near Londa on Friday. According to information reaching here, four bogies derailed and one overturned. The goods train was hauling 54 wagons carrying iron ore from Papinayakanahalli near Hospet to Sanvordem in Goa. The incident happened just outside the Londa yard on the track going towards Castlerock. Efforts were under way to restore rail traffic. K.D. Mainrai, Divisional Railway Manager, Hubli, has rushed to the spot. The derailment has delayed the departure of Vasco-Hazarat Nizamuddin Goa express. There has, however, been no impact on the movement of trains between Hubli and Miraj via Londa.

`Opportunities reduced'

BANGALORE OCT. 29. Mechanisation has reduced employment opportunities for women workers in the construction sector, Geetha Ramamkrishnan, Nirman Mazdoor Panchayat Sangha, has said. Speaking at a two-day consultation on "The problems and perspectives of women workers in the unorganised sector" here on Friday, she said globalisation was adversely affecting the livelihood of people in the unorganised sector. Ms. Geetha also said that bonded labour was a serious problem, as the Bonded Labour Act was not being implemented properly. Ruth Manorama, president of the National Alliance of Women, said women continued to work in traditional sectors of unorganised labour activities while the men had moved on to other areas that were better paying. This, she said, was because the contribution of women to these sectors remained unrecognised. The consultation is being organised by the National Centre for Labour.

New scheme for SHG members

DHARWAD Oct. 29. The Malaprabha Grameena Bank covering Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag and Belgaum, in collaboration with the Life Insurance Corporation of India, has introduced a novel scheme of providing insurance cover to members of self-help groups. Known as the Malaprabha Jeevan Kshema Scheme, it involves paying an annual premium of Rs. 200 by each member. Of this amount, the bank obtains Rs. 100 from the Social Security Fund of the Union Government. Besides providing life cover for the first time of Rs. 20,000, which is not available to them under the General Insurance Scheme, the scheme gives enhanced amount available in the case of accidental death and total disability in an accident up to Rs. 50,000, and partial disability in an accident up to Rs. 25,000. The bank will also provide services such as collection of premium and securing relief from the LIC. It is available for members in the age group of 18-59 and no medical test is required. It has been planned to give scholarship on limited basis to the children of the participants with a view to popularising the new scheme. Giving details of the scheme, B.S. Surendra, Chairman of the Malaprabha Grameena Bank, and A.K. Kamble, Divisional Manager, LIC, told presspersons that it had been conceived as a welfare scheme.

Kanaka Sene stages rasta roko

SHIMOGA Oct. 29. Members of the Kanaka Sene and pro-People's Associations staged a rasta roko in front of Sahyadri College on BH Road here on Friday in protest against the demolition of the "Kanaka Gopura'' at the Sri Krishna Temple in Udupi. They blocked traffic for sometime by forming a "human chain". Addressing a meeting, the farmers' leader, Kadidal Shamanna, said it was unfortunate that those who were expected to guide society were creating problems themselves. Rajendra Channi said Kanakadasa did not belong to any particular community but he was a saint par excellence representing the State's culture. He condemned the demolition of the memorial in the name of Hindu Samaj. The president of the District Kanaka Yuvak Sene, Ranganath, and Palaksha, S.P. Seshadri, Ravikumar, V. Raju, Manjula Devi, Prasanna Kumar and K.L. Ashok led the demonstration. The demonstrators submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.

Gheraoed

DAVANGERE OCT. 29. A large number of people living in different slums in Davangere city on Friday gheraoed the Deputy Director of the Department of Food and Civil Supplies for withdrawing their ration cards.

The department officials told the agitators that the Government had set guidelines and ration cards could not be issued to anybody who possessed items such as refrigerator, colour television, or telephone.

They told them that it was the policy of the Government and they had been acting as instructed.

However, the officials said that they would look into the matter.

Protest

DAVANGERE OCT. 29. A large number of farmers on Friday staged a dharna in front of the office of the Joint Director of the Agriculture protesting against the "inferior" quality of pesticides supplied to them by the Agriculture Department.

The farmers alleged that the pesticides were of no use and pests affected the paddy crop grown in about 25,000 hectares.

They demanded that they be given good quality pesticides.

Yoga camp

MYSORE Oct. 29. Sri Krishna Yoga and Dhyana Kendra will conduct a weekly programme on solving health problems through nature science.

According to a press statement from the kendra coordinator, Cheluvaraju, stomach disorders, backache, acidity, gastritis, asthma, menstrual problems, rheumatism and different types of stress and strain can be cured by acupressure, yoga, dhyana, pranayama, Sudarshan kriya and pranic healing.

Experts in different areas of nature science will hold the programme from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. every Sunday at the kendra premises, Kuvempu Trust, Kalidasa Road, Jayalakshmipuram. Details are available on phone (9886244193).

MBA course

MYSORE Oct. 29. The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Mysore Study Centre, has invited applications for its MBA course. Application forms can be obtained from the IGNOU Study Centre, Vidyavardhaka Law College, Seshadri Iyer Road, Mysore, between 3.30 p.m. and 5.30 pm.

Parking fee withdrawn

SHIMOGA Oct. 29. The city municipal council at its meeting here on Friday decided to withdraw the levy of vehicle parking fee from November 1 following opposition to the charge.

Meanwhile, in a press note, the municipal president, B.A. Ramesh Hegde, and commissioner, S.P. Mudhol, asked people not to pay fee for parking vehicles on Nehru Road.

Meeting

Belgaum Oct. 29. The Karnataka State Dalit and Backward Class Hitarakshana and Kalyan Sangh will be organising its first State-level matrimonial meet on the Kannada Sahitya Parishat premises here on November 7. According to the sangh president, Lokeshappa, more than 2,000 prospective brides and bridegrooms had already registered with the sangh. The marriages will be conducted on the traditions and customs of the families of the couples. However, they will have to first register their marriages at the Registrar of Marriages.

The couples have to give an undertaking that they will support the educational requirements of at least five students in their respective villages and towns.

Jagruthi Jatha

SHIMOGA Oct. 29. Schoolchildren took out a procession here on Friday holding placards and raising slogans as part of the Jagruthi Jatha to create awareness about the need to consume iodine to overcome health problems.

The demonstration was organised jointly by the district administration, the Department of Health and Family Welfare and the Rotary Club East as part of World Iodine Deficiency Control Day.

The children of local schools participated in the procession from the Sub Jail to the Deputy Commissioner's office. Members of voluntary organisations and officials of the departments concerned also participated.
