BJP faults Government on TTD member nomination

HYDERABAD: The BJP on Friday objected to nomination of the TUDA Chairman as ex-officio member of the TTD saying it was `motivated' and amounted to an `attack on religious convictions of a community'.

S.V. Seshagiri Rao, BJP vice-president, in a statement issued here alleged that by this nomination the Government intended to `illegally' utilise the TTD funds for other municipalities.

While demanding withdrawal of the nomination, Mr. Rao charged the Government with resorting to attacks on religious faith of a community. He called upon swamijis and heads of maths to force the Government to drop it.

The BJP clarified that while it was not against a non-Hindu becoming the TUDA Chairman, it did not want those not connected with and opposed to Hindu religion and atheists to occupy the post as it would amount to controlling the assets of a different sect.

Ban on transfers lifted

Hyderabad: The ban on inter-district and inter-zone transfers of Government employees, which was lifted on Thursday, does not apply to Government teachers. The issue of teacher transfers is presently pending before the Supreme Court and a decision will be taken on this once the apex court clears the issue.

The Secretary (Services), General Administration Department, Satish Chandra, said that the G.O. does not provide for mass transfer in case of Government employees either. The plea for transfers to places outside the district and the zone would be entertained on three grounds

-- an employee wife wanting to join her husband at a different place and vice versa, request for mutual shifting and transfer on disciplinary grounds. In all these cases, TA/DA benefits would not be extended and employees on both ends would have to forgo seniority.

Hearing on Pulichintala to continue on Nov. 1

HYDERABAD: Arguments on the Pulichintala project in the High Court will continue on Monday. The Bench, comprising the Chief Justice, Devinder Gupta, and the Justice, C.V. Ramulu, on Friday heard at length the arguments in petitions filed pertaining to the project.

A writ petition was filed complaining that the Government was going ahead with the project construction without obtaining environmental clearance. Several leaders from Krishna and Guntur districts have filed impleading petitions in support of the project.

PCB orders closure of 6 units

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board on Friday ordered closure of six industries in four districts after its task force reviewed them under the jurisdiction of the Hyderabad zonal office.

The industries are: M/s. Can Lubricants, Rayachoti Road, Utukur village (Cuddapah), M/s. Krishna Traders, IDA, Cuddapah, M/s. Sreenivasa Lubricants, Viratnagar, Proddatur, M/s. Raghavendra Industries, Settipalli Industrial Estate (Chittoor), M/s. Sunder Ispat Ltd, Ippalapally village (Mahabubnagar) and M/s. Reseloca Chemicals, Ranga Reddy Nagar (Ranga Reddy), according to a press release.

12 DSPs transferred

HYDERABAD: The Government on Friday transferred 12 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) and gave them new postings. Following are the officers transferred with new postings in bracket: A. Venkata Swamy, P.S.S.P. Babu, M. Laxminarayana, Ch. S. Ramachandra Rao and V. Venkateswarlu (Anti-Corruption Bureau), T. Narasimha Chari, C. Ranga Reddy and B. Ramavadhani (Intelligence), B.V.R. Prasad (Police Training College, Anantapur), V. Pandarinath and M. Balaswamy (Crime Investigation Department) and K. N. Gangadhar (PTC, Hyderabad).

YSR reviews functioning of rythu bazars

Hyderabad: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has asked officials to improve the functioning of rythu bazars in the State.

Reviewing their functioning on Friday, Dr. Reddy asked officials to auction the loss-making bazars.

Award for scientists

ANANTAPUR: The Vasantrao Naik Award for research applications in dryland agriculture for 2003, being given by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), has been awarded to a three-member team of scientists of Agriculture Research Station, Reddipalli, of Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University near here.

The principal scientist of ARS, T. Yellamanda Reddy, his associates -- D. Balaguravaiah and Y. Padmalatha -- have been given the prestigious award. The award was presented at ICAR awards ceremony held in New Delhi last week. Dr. Balaguravaiah is presently working at ARS Garikapadu in Krishna district as the principal scientist in water management.

Starvation death in Nizamabad district?

NIZAMABAD: Rajampeta Dakavva (45) of Arepally in Machareddy mandal reportedly died of starvation on Friday.

According to information, she had been suffering from hunger for some time. Her husband, Yellaiah, is serving jail for hacking to death their daughter who was physically challenged.

Farmer commits suicide

ADILABAD: Sakepalli Ashanna, a cotton farmer from Umdam village in Talamadugu mandal, has committed suicide due to mounting debts.

The farmer, who consumed pesticide on Thursday, was shifted to hospital where he died on Friday.

Lifer for killing wife

CUDDAPAH: The Cuddapah Principal Sessions Judge, T. Lakshmana Rao, on Friday sentenced Pandikunta Venkataramana Reddy of Pandikunta village in Galiveedu mandal to undergo life imprisonment for battering his wife to death.

According to the prosecution, Venkataramana Reddy beat his wife, P. Bayyamma, to death with a pestle on October 19, 2002.

Ends life after poisoning daughter

NANDYAL: In a suicide pact, a woman and her daughter committed suicide by consuming poison at Sanjivareddy Nagar in Nandyal on Thursday night.

According to reports, Subbalakshmi, 30, consumed poisoned milk after serving the same to her daughter, Mounika (5). Both died in hospital while undergoing treatment.

Rain likely in parts of State

VISAKHAPATNAM: Thursday's low-pressure area lies over south west Bay of Bengal off Tamil Nadu coast on Friday evening, according to the Cyclone Warning Centre here.

Under its influence, rain or thundershowers are likely at many places over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and at a few places over north coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next 36 hours.

Heavy rain is also likely at one or two places over Nellore and Prakasam districts during the same period.

Chief amounts of rainfall recorded in centimetres during the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Friday: Sulurpet - 4 and Nellore - 3.

SP to meet people

WARANGAL: The Superintendent of Police, Kothakota Srinivasa Reddy, would be available for the public to relate their grievances in person daily from 11 am to 12 noon.

Hitherto, the SP had been meeting complainants on Monday and Friday. In view of the forthcoming AP Police Sports and Games meet beginning from November 7, the SP desired to meet the public on a daily basis. Those reaching the office after the scheduled hours may lodge their complaints at the Central Complaints Cell. They would be personally looked into by the SP.

Five held in dowry case

ADILABAD: The II Town police on Friday arrested five members of a family from Mahalaxmiwada locality who were accused in the October 26 dowry death of Kaisar Sultana alias Kaisar Banu, 22.

Producing the accused Irshad Khan (husband of deceased), Sanaullah Khan and Badrunnisa Begum (inlaws) and Sadath Khan and Asmath Khan brothers of Irshad at a press conference here on Friday, Adilabad DSP K. Sarveswara Rao and II Town SI Komraiah said Irshad was married to Kaisar Banu three months ago. Unable to bear harassment for more dowry, she committed suicide by dousing herself with kerosene and setting afire. Her brother Shaik Shahabuddin gave a complaint to the police.

Cash award for merit students

NIZAMABAD: Three girls and as many boys who had got distinction in the 7th Class in the academic year 2003-04 in the district will be presented a cash award of Rs.5,000 each by the Andhra Pradesh State Trading Corporation, according to the APSTC Managing Director, Manohar Prasad.

The awards will be presented to the meritorious students at a function to be held here on November 1, the AP Formation Day, he said in a press release.

The awardees are D. Hanumanth of ZPHS, Dongli in Madnur mandal, E. Navya of Madumalancha high school in Bodhan town, G. Prasad of ZPHS, Konasamunder in Kammarpally mandal, A. Rajani of UPS Palem in Morthad mandal, Kalyani of CUPS in Yellareddy mandal and S. Saraswathi of CUPS, Nathmal.

FP camp held

ADILABAD: The Lions Club of Adilabad and the district medical and health department on Friday jointly organised a mega family planning camp at the district headquarter hospital. About 200 tubectomies were performed by 15 doctors who participated in the camp. The women on whom the tubectomies were performed belonged to the poor strata, according to Lions Club of Adilabad president, T. Shiva Prasad, and zonal chairman, S. Mikund Rao.

House panel sitting ends

TIRUPATI: The Sub-ordinate Committee on Legislations headed by Appayya Dora has today wound-up its two-day sitting with an in-camera discussion with the TTD's Executive Officer, Ajeya Kallam on various coming under the purview of the panel. The team was given a overview of the TTD's history and appraised about its technical and religious administration.

LIC staff seek wage revision

CUDDAPAH: LIC employees went on a two-hour token strike and staged a dharna in front of the divisional and branch offices here on Friday, demanding a wage revision pending for two-and-half years.

Legal services week

CHITTOOR: Legal services week will be held at different places in the district from November 3 to 9, according to the district judge, M. Vijayabhaskar Reddy. Legal literacy camps and Lok Adalts will be conducted. At S.R. Puram and Kothapalli Mitta, legal literacy camps will be organised on November 3 with the assistance of the law college, Chittoor, on November 4 at Sankaraiah Gunta, Chittoor, on November 5 at Iruvaram, on November 8 at Chittoor grade-II sub jail, and on November 9 at Bangrupalem M.R.O. Office. Lok Adalat will be hdl at Chittoor and on November 7.

One killed in road mishap

Kurnool: One person died in a road accident on the National Highway No. 7 near Peapuly in Kurnool district in the early hours of Friday. According to reports, the mishap occurred when the car in which he was travelling hit a culvert and a bullock cart. The deceased was identified as Meena Lafthi, 44 of Shuklagunj in Khanpur district.

BMS training camp

NELLORE: Coinciding with the golden jubilee of Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), the district unit is organising a two-day training camp from Saturday at the Meenakshi Kalyanamandapam, Nellore.

Farmer's house burgled

NELLORE: Thieves gained entry into a farmer's house at Allurpet near Allur town on Thursday and took away cash and jewellery worth nearly Rs. 2 lakhs. The crime was committed even while the family members were sleeping in the open place in front of the house. The culprits gained entry by breaking open the lock of the main door.

TVS service centre opened

TIRUPATI: Vijaya Bharati TVS, the authorised main dealer for TVS Motor Company, has opened an additional service outlet on Tirumala bypass road here on Thursday. A service centre at Sri Kalahasti was also opened later.
