Committee submits report on road transport sector

NEW DELHI, OCT. 29. The committee, which examined the issues concerning the road transport sector including imposition of service tax on transport agency, has submitted its report recommending redefining of various terms to remove any ambiguity and further spelling out responsibility in relation to realisation of the levy.

However, it suggested that in case of certain categories of consignors or consignees the liability to pay service tax should not rest with the goods transport agency but in all other cases it would be liable to recover and deposit the tax.

The truckers had earlier this year gone on a countrywide strike opposing the service tax and other issues.
