Defamation suit against Arjun Singh dismissed

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, OCT. 29. A defamation complaint filed against the Human Resource Development Minister, Arjun Singh, by the State unit of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has been dismissed by a magistrate court here.

In his complaint, the State president of the RSS, Durai Shankar, referred to a reported statement of Mr. Singh that the "biggest achievement of the RSS was the killing of Gandhi." According to him, Mr. Singh had further called upon the Prime Minister to "cleanse the administration of people owing allegiance to the RSS." He said the statements were per se defamatory and injured the reputation of the RSS and its members.

However, when the matter came up before him, the XIII Metropolitan Magistrate, Ramanathan, dismissed the complaint saying that it pertained to a matter which was more than 50-years-old, and that he did not see any reason to entertain it. Further, not enough material evidence had been produced in court to corroborate the allegations, the Magistrate said while dismissing the complaint.
