Appaiah Gowda's feats to be remembered

MADIKERI, OCT. 30. The Guddemane Appaiah Gowda Memorial Committee here is commemorating the 167th year of the supreme sacrifice of the freedom fighter here on Sunday, general secretary of the committee, Guddemane Ramesh, said here on Saturday.

Leading personalities of the district, intellectuals, freedom fighters, MLAs, heads of various organisations and associations are expected to take part in the function. Guddemane Appaiah Gowda had played a leading role in the Kodagu-Canara mutiny against the British. He was, however, caught by the British and hanged in public at the fort here on October 31, 1837.

Appaiah Gowda was in the forefront among several renowned freedom fighters such as Kedambadi Rama Gowda, Mandira Uthaiah, Veeranna Banta, Shantamallayya, Chetti Kudiya and others, who rebelled against the British over the taxation system. He was a Subedar in the Government service then. He was part of the team which had driven out the British from Sullia on April 6, 1837, in the Amar Sullia mutiny.
