A control room has been opened at the Collectorate. "We have been monitoring the situation continuously," Dr. Radhakrishnan said.

The Nagapattinam Collector, M. Veera Shanmugha Moni, inspected regulators at several villages in the tail-end areas of the delta this afternoon, to ensure they were strong enough to withstand a heavy quantum of water that would be let into rivers.

He inspected the regulators at Nariyankudi, Vadugacheri and Yervaikadu and instructed the PWD officials to take steps to drain out the water from the paddy fields through the regulators.

Mr. Moni also asked them to ensure the safety of villagers while diverting the water, and he appealed to the residents of Anakudi to move to safer places, in case of inundation.
