THANJAVUR, OCT. 30. Heavy rain lashed the Cauvery delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam for the third day today. Thirupoondi in Nagapattinam district recorded an unprecedented 408 mms. It was after five years that such an amount of rain was recorded. In Tiruvarur district, crops were submerged at many places. Officials of the Agriculture Department, however, said the rain would not affect the crops, as water started receding. Schools remained closed for the second day today in Thanjavur district. A culvert was damaged near Ammapettai. The Collector, J. Radhakrishnan, visited the spot and asked the Public Works Department to repair it. A control room has been opened at the Collectorate. "We have been monitoring the situation continuously," Dr. Radhakrishnan said. The following is the chief amount of rainfall (in mm) recorded till 8 a.m.: Thanjavur 71.3, Sirkali 107, Nagapattinam 312, Tiruvarur 247, Kumbakonam 63, Kodavasal 153, the Grand Anaicut canal 29, Thiruvaiyaru 49, the Lower Anaicut 100, Mayiladuthurai 123, Mannargudi 25, Orathanadu 38, Papanasam 50, Nannilam 141 and Pattukottai 12.
Collector inspects regulators
The Nagapattinam Collector, M. Veera Shanmugha Moni, inspected regulators at several villages in the tail-end areas of the delta this afternoon, to ensure they were strong enough to withstand a heavy quantum of water that would be let into rivers. He inspected the regulators at Nariyankudi, Vadugacheri and Yervaikadu and instructed the PWD officials to take steps to drain out the water from the paddy fields through the regulators. Mr. Moni also asked them to ensure the safety of villagers while diverting the water, and he appealed to the residents of Anakudi to move to safer places, in case of inundation.
Tiruchi
Several parts of Tiruchi, Pudukottai and Perambalur districts received rain for the third day today. Tiruchi city received intermittent rain, at times heavy, especially in the morning. Some of the low-level residential colonies were inundated. The Lalgudi area received heavy rain, with Kallakudi registering a maximum of 100.4 mm during the past 24 hours that ended at 8.30 a.m. Pullampadi received 84.8, Pulivalam 80, Nandiyar Thalaippu 73, Lalgudi 60.2, Thuraiyur 53, Tiruchi Town 25.6, Thathiyengarpet 25, Samayapuram 24 and Musiri 19. The district received an average of 48.51 mm.
Perambalur
Heavy rain lashed Perambalur district. The following were the chief amount of rainfall (in mm) recorded at various places: Thirumanur 133; Jayamkondam 93; Senthurai 79.2; Ariyalur 68; Chettikulam 65; Padalur 45; Thazuthazai 38.2; and Venbavur 32.5. Farmers griped that the rain resulted in an indiscriminate growth of weeds, especially since the fields were cultivated only this year after three consecutive years of drought.
Pudukottai
Several parts of Pudukottai received good spells of rain. Kattumavadi received 122 mm, Manamelkudi 89.6, Avudayarkovil 80.4, Karambakudi 58, Perungalur 54, Meemisal 50.6, Aranthangi 50, Arimalam 45, Nagudi 40.4, Adhanakottai 38, Malaiyur 35, Gandharvakottai and Alangudi 33, Thirumayam 21.2 and Pudukottai 17. Irrigation tanks were getting good flows.
Mettur level
The level in the Mettur dam stood at 90.18 feet today. The inflow was 7, 619 cusecs, and the discharge 100 cusecs.
