Foreign currency of Rs. 22 lakhs seized in airport

HYDERABAD,
OCT. 30.
Assorted foreign currency worth Rs. 22 lakhs was seized from a passenger flying from Chennai to Dubai by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Hyderabad unit officials at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here on Saturday. The currency notes, including Euro and Saudi Riyals of 500 denomination, were kept in a paper pack sealed with brown tape and hidden in the passenger's personal bag, a press release said.
A resident of Tamil Nadu, the passenger told officials that he frequently travelled to and from countries like Singapore, Malaysia and Sri Lanka to bring costly electronic goods. He maintained that he received the cash at Chennai airport from a person who procured it from `grey market'.
The cash was supposed to be handed over to another person at Dubai airport. The passenger was remanded to judicial custody.
