This Day That Age
A two-day celebration in memory of Maharaja Swati Thirunal, composer of Carnatic music, started in New Delhi on October 30. The function which was organised by the Delhi Malayalee Association, was presided over by Mr. T.L. Venkatarama Aiyer, Judge of the Supreme Court and an authority on Carnatic music. Sardar K.M. Panikkar, Member of the States Reorganisation Commission, inaugurated it. Mr. Venkatarama Aiyer described Swati Thirunal as a "king among musicians and a musician among kings." The contribution to music of Swati Thirunal, one of the great rulers of Travancore, was immense in quantity as well as quality. A remarkable fact about the Royal composer was that he not only composed a variety of forms of Carnatic music like kirtanas, padams, varnams and tillanas, but produced them in different languages like Sanskrit, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi.
