Aziz's South Asia tour from today

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD, OCT. 31. The Pakistan Prime Minister, Shaukat Aziz, is leaving tomorrow on a tour of three countries in South Asia in his capacity as Chairman of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). It is a SAARC tradition to visit member-countries at least once during a Chairman's tenure.

In the first leg of his four-day tour, from November 1-4, Mr. Aziz will visit Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. The visit to India, the Maldives and Sri Lanka would take place after the third week of November.

In the second leg, Mr. Aziz is expected to be in New Delhi on November 22.

Pakistan assumed the chairmanship of SAARC at the 12th Summit held in Islamabad in January this year. This is Mr. Aziz's first visit to South Asia. Though he is visiting the region in his capacity as the SAARC Chairman, it would provide him an opportunity for interaction on a wide range of subjects.

The Pakistan Foreign Office said that in his interaction with the South Asian interlocutors, Mr. Aziz would `reaffirm' Pakistan's commitment to regional cooperation, besides discussing bilateral issues and regional and global developments. It said he would exchange views on Pakistan's vision for SAARC.
