Top boards witness draws

By Our Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA, OCT. 31 . The top three boards in the second round of the TVS Open National chess tournament for the Kusalava Trophy witnessed drawn contests at the Chenupati Ramakotaiah Municipal Corporation Kreeda Pranganam here on Sunday.

Favourite Dinesh Kumar Sharma mounted a kingside attack against Abhilash Reddy in a Sicilian Dragon game. Quite abruptly, Abhilash sacrificed a bishop on the 17th move and went four pawns up. Subsequently Sharma, caught in a time scramble, couldn't explore a winning possibility and called a truce.

On the second board, Harish Sharma, playing white, went a pawn up at the 24th turn against M.B. Muralidharan. The former's blunder on the 50th gave black a passed pawn. Despite being two pawns up, black occupied the crucial e4 square, forcing Sharma to settle for a draw.
