Workshop on urology

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, OCT. 31. Working at offering a simple solution to a difficult problem, doctors at the Medical Point Urology Laser Institute here in the Capital -- the only hospital offering Green Light PVP Laser Procedure, an advanced technique to treat prostrate -- has brought together top physicians from across the world to educate and discuss the advancement in treating enlarged prostrates in men, a common problem seen in people over 60 years.

The condition results in frequent urination especially at night, sudden need to urinate, pain or burning, feeling that your bladder never completely empties, dribbling or leaking and weak stream.

To be discussed at the three-day International Workshop on Advanced Urology which began this Saturday, is the use of the latest technique for treating patients in the country.

Participating in the meet are world-renowned urologist and physicians who have worked towards adding to the already available techniques of treating the condition.

They include Shamim Khan and Prokar Das Gupta, from Guys and St. Thomas Hospital, London, and T.R.G. Larner from Brigton and Sussex University Hospital Trust besides other doctors and patients.

Speaking about the latest technique available to patients for treatment of enlarged prostrate, medical director and chief urologist, Medical Point Urology Laser Institute, Rajeev Sood, said, "The Green Light PVP Laser Procedure uses a very high powered laser to immediately vaporise and precisely remove enlarged prostate tissue. And most patients can return home a few hours after the procedure and resume normal non-strenuous activities within days. The procedure delivers a good solution as it combines safety and quick recovery. Medical therapy is usually the first line of defence against enlarged prostrate symptoms and they are a costly option, besides of course coping with the side effects.''

Minimally invasive surgery is not new in India and its popularity has been growing but not with the speed and awareness that it really deserves and over a period newer and better technology has come into the area giving surgeons and patients.

Dr. Khan, who specialises in surgery for stress urinary incontinence, said: "The breakthrough in new laser procedure is safe and effective treatment for the most common ailment experienced by men over the age of 50. And while work on more improved versions of the technique is still in its trial form, but the benefits will be offered worldwide soon and we are here to talk about the new advancements in the area and share information about what our Indian counterparts are doing.''
