IUML activists attack Indiavision office, scribes

By Our Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE, OCT. 31. A group of activists belonging to the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) today attacked the office of the Indiavision TV channel at Cherootty Road here.

Some mediapersons who were standing in front of the Indiavision office too were attacked by the group.

The incidents occurred when the IUML activists today took out two processions from the League House and Court Road here at 4 p.m. to protest against the telecast and publication of reports against the Industries Minister, P.K. Kunhalikutty.

Bank office destroyed

A group of activists concentrated in the pocket roads near the Indiavision office at Cherootty Road and threw stones at the office. The window panes of the Indian Overseas Bank office at the same building complex were destroyed in the stone throwing.

Leaders interfere

Later, a group of 20 persons tried to barge into the Indiavision office shouting pro-Kunhalikutty slogans. However, they were dissuaded and driven back by the IUML leaders P.K.K. Bava, T.P.M. Zaheer, and M.C. Mayin Haji, who visited the spot on hearing the news of attack.

MYL too joins attack

Meanwhile, a group of suspected Muslim Youth League (MYL) workers approached the Indiavision office with threatening slogans. They turned their ire at the mediapersons and photographers who were standing in front of the office. They roughed up the New Indian Express chief reporter M.P. Prasanth and broke the lens of the Deshabhimani photographer K.S. Praveenkumar.

The miscreants manhandled Mr. Prashant. The police at the scene intervened and scared away the attackers. Mr. Prasanth was admitted to the Baby Memorial Hospital with injuries. The Public Works Minister, M.K. Muneer, the Minister for Local Self-Government, Kutty Ahmed Kutty, and the Calicut Development Authority chairman, M.C. Mayin Haji, visited Mr. Prasanth at the hospital.

Condemned

The CPI deputy leader in the Assembly, Benoy Viswom, condemned the attack on the Indiavision office and mediapersons. Mr. Viswom was also present at the office when the attack took place.

The Congress (S) State president, Kadanappally Ramachandran, also condemned the attack on the TV channel office and mediapersons. The DYFI had called for a State-wide ``black day'' tomorrow in Kozhikode and Malappuram demanding resignation of Mr. Kunhalikutty.

Meanwhile, Rejina, who had revived the ice-cream parlour sex case with allegations of sexual harassment against the Industries Minister, P.K. Kunhalikutty, continued to be at her home at Cheruvattakadavu near here with police protection.

Kochi office attacked

The office of Indiavision channel in Kochi was also attacked by a group of people around 9.30 tonight. The attackers threw stones at the office and attacked a car parked in front of the office. They ran away as soon as the staff arrived at the scene.
