Governor greets Keralites
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
OCT. 31.
The Governor, R. L. Bhatia, has offered his greetings to Malayalis all over the world on the occasion of the Kerala Formation Day, falling on Monday. In a statement issued here today, he expressed the hope that the people of the State would stand united and devote all their energies in taking the State forward along the path of development.
C-DIT director's term ends
Achuth Sankar S. Nair today stepped down from the post of the director of the Centre for Development of Imaging Technology (C-DIT) following the completion of the three-year term of his deputation to the post. He will return to the University of University, where he is a teacher in Computer Sciences. During his term in C-DIT, he reconstituted the institution to give its activities better focus, initiated several novel projects and gave leadership for the development of a string of IT products intended especially for the education sector. This State public sector institution became fully self-sustaining financially during his term.
New 110 kV sub-station
A 110 kV sub-station of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) will be commissioned at Thumba, near here, tomorrow. This is the third 110 kV sub-station to become part of the power transmission system in the State since the Government announced its 100-day action plan, the KSEB said in a press release. It will improve the quality of power supply in places such as Thumba, Manvila, Kolathukara, Koralan Kuzhi, Karimanal, Pullukadavu, Kunnumpuram, Poundukadavu, Kuzhivila and Pallithura in Thiruvananthapuram district. A 20 per cent improvement in voltage is expected in these areas because of the new installation, constructed at a cost of Rs. 8 crores, the KSEB said. It will also help avoid disruptions in power supply in Thiruvananthapuram city, the KSEB added.
Guest lecturers wanted
The Government College at Munnar, in Idukki district, has two vacancies of guest lecturers in English. The college Principal, in a press release, said applicants should have scored at least 55 per cent marks in M.A. English. Those who have passed the National Eligibility Test of the University Grants Commission will be given preference. The applications should reach the Principal, Government College, Munnar, Idukki district, before November 15.
Rededication Day observed
Employees of the State Secretariat today observed the National Rededication Day on the occasion of the death anniversary of the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. They were administered the `re-dedication pledge' by the Finance Minister, Vakkom Purushothaman, at a function in the secretariat compound.
SET on January 30
The State Eligibility Test (SET) for appointment as higher secondary school teachers will be conducted on January 30, 2005, according to an official press release. The LBS Centre for Science and Technology is the agency conducting the test. Diploma holders in Hindi Teaching, even if they do not possess the B.Ed. qualification (required in the case of other subjects) too can appear for the
New Secretary for TDB
V. S. Ramanujam, who had been functioning as the Assistant Devaswom Commissioner in Kollam, today took charge as the Secretary of the Travancore Devaswom Board at its headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram.
More flights from Qatar Airways
Qatar Airways has increased the number of weekly flights operated from Doha to the State from 10 to 26 with effect from Monday. According to the airline, two flights will be operated everyday, expect Friday, from Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi. On Friday, the flight will be only in the morning. The morning flight from Thiruvananthapuram is scheduled at 9.15 a.m. and the evening flights are scheduled at 5.30 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. On Monday, Tuesday and Saturday, the flight will depart at 7 p.m.
Yati remembered

Nitya Chaithanya Yati was a sage who walked ahead of his times upholding the principles of Sree Narayana Guru, M. Ramachandran, judge of Kerala High Court, has said. He was speaking after inaugurating a seminar organised by Guru Smarana Samithy in connection with the 80th birth anniversary of Yati. Muni Narayana Prasad of Varkala Gurukulam presided.
CPI(M) activist stabbed
KANNUR
OCT. 31.
A CPI(M) activist was stabbed allegedly by a group of RSS workers at Dharmadom near Thalassery today. The police identified the victim as Karyath Suresh (42), an autorickshaw driver. The police said that Suresh was driving his autorickshaw when a group of assailants stopped the vehicle and stabbed him at around 7 a.m. He suffered multiple stab injuries in his legs and hands. Suresh has been admitted to the Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode. The attack is suspected to be a sequel to the tension prevailing in the area following incidents of clashes between CPI(M) and RSS activists. An RSS activist was stabbed by suspected CPI(M) workers at nearby Kolassery recently.
2 killed, 4 injured in accident

Devaki, 60, and her son Sunilkumar, 27, of Vengattu house at Venmani near Chengannur were killed and four others injured, three of them seriously, when an autorickshaw in which they were travelling turned turtle at Mylapra today. The seriously injured have been identified as Devaki's daughter, Usha, 34, and Usha's children, Deepu, 11, and Sreekuttan, 9. They were admitted to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. The auto driver, Renjith, was admitted to the General Hospital here.
Man killed in attack

A 36-year-old man, Simon Chacko alias Saji of Edathittasseril, hailing from Niranam Idathodu near Thiruvalla was killed and his brother, C. G. Varghese (45) alias Achenkunju, sustained injuries in an attack by a group of unidentified people at Niranam on Saturday night. Police said the incident occurred on the road at Niranam Chempupadashekharom under the cover of night while the two brothers were returning home.
Simon had been campaigning against illicit spirit trade in and around Niranam since the last few years. There was an attempt on his life reportedly by the goondas of the illicit liquor lobby two years ago and police had registered a case in connection with the attack.
The injured, Vargehse, has been admitted to the taluk hospital at Harippad in Alappuzha district, the police said.
Festival offer
KOTTAYAM

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will extend the festival offer of new connections at an initial payment of Re. 1 at several exchanges under Kottayam SDA. The exchanges that will be covered under the new scheme include Kottayam, Kanjikkuzhi, Nattakom, Mooledom, Kumaranallore, Changanassery, Panachikkad, Ponkunnam, Koruthode, Velichiyani and Monippally. There will be no installation charges. The offer will be valid till November 15, according to BSNL authorities.
