KOLKATA, OCT. 31. Seasoned campaigner N.R. Indu of PSPB and Mamta Prabhu of RSPB had to face the ignominy of losing in the first round of the women's singles event of the Indian Oil Servo National ranking table tennis championship (East Zone) here at the SAI, Eastern Centre, on Sunday. Up-and-coming Mamta, seeded third, fell to Avanti Sinha of LIC 4-11, 11-1, 5-11, 11-9, 11-6, 13-15, 11-9 while fourth-seeded Indu was eliminated by former sub-junior National champion Madhurika Patkar of RSPB 11-7, 11-9, 7-11, 11-9, 9-11, 10-12, 11-6. Otherwise, all the top players in the distaff side moved up comfortably. Poulami Ghatak and Mouma Das came up with easy wins against juniors. Poulami outplayed Ashlesha Bodas of Maharashtra 11-5, 11-5, 11-7, 11-4, Mouma, who was the lone Indian women to make it to the Athens Olympics, cruised past V.S. Nirupama of Tamil Nadu 11-5, 11-3, 11-7, 11-9. B. Bhuvaneswari of PSPB, who returned after a lay off, was extended by K. Samini of Banks Sports Board to full distance. Bhuvaneswari won 11-9, 16-14, 11-9, 9-11, 5-11, 8-11, 11-7. Railways' Anindita Chakraborty, who was down 1-3, recovered in time to beat M. Aparna of Tamil Nadu 7-11, 7-11, 11-4, 7-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-7. Santanu Majumder (CoE), R. Avishek (Indian Bank), Kollol Ganguly (CoE), Aaditya Mahagoankar (Maharashtra), S. Thirukumaran (TN), Md. Ali Baba (AP), Sivanandan (IB) and Sourav Pradhan (CoE) are the eight qualifiers for the men's main draw. The top seed in junior boys section, Soumyajit Sarkar of Centre of Excellence, has pulled out of the meet. Second seed Aniket Koparkar of Maharashtra was made No. 1 seed. Amarnath Das of CoE is the fourth seed behind Zubin Kumar and Devesh Karia of PSPB A. Priyadarsani and R. Aadityae, both of Tamil Nadu, Palabi Parashar of Assam and Poulami Ghosh of Bengal qualified for the sub-junior girls' main draw. Our Special Correspondent
