Visa racket busted, one arrested

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, OCT. 31. One person has been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police for allegedly duping people of huge amounts of money in the name of providing them visas for the United Kingdom. He had earlier been arrested in similar cases along with his partner who is absconding.

The police said one Bhisham Singh had approached Gursharan Singh, a resident of Gurdaspur district in Punjab, about two months ago. Bhisham had assured him that he knew people who could get him visa for the UK.

Gursharan got convinced and came to Delhi in September along with Bhisham. The latter took him to two persons, identified as Kunal Kumar Chopra and Nakul Kohli, at Paharganj in Central Delhi. The duo promised Gursharan visa for Rs. 5 lakhs and asked him to give Rs. 1 lakh in advance. Gursharan handed over the advance amount and his passport.

On October 26, Gursharan met the duo again. They gave him the visa and passport and demanded the payment of Rs. 4 lakhs. Gursharan, however, got suspicious about the genuineness of the visa as he was not asked to visit the British High Commission even once. He told the duo that he would pay the remaining amount only after verification.

Gursharan got it confirmed from his sources that the visa was a fake one and immediately contacted the police. A case was registered and investigations handed over to the Crime Branch.

The police asked Gursharan to tell the duo that he was convinced about the genuineness of the visa and that he was ready to pay the remaining amount. Accordingly, a trap was laid in Parharganj on October 29 and Kunal was arrested. Subsequent raids at Nakul's hideouts, however, did not yield any result.

Interrogation revealed that Nakul was the mastermind behind the racket and used high technology to produce the fake visa stickers. He had earlier been arrested twice by the Special Cell and also by the Paharganj police in the past couple of years.

Kunal too was arrested by the Connaught Place police in February for allegedly selling off a Santro car which he had got financed from a multi-national Bank.

The duo, both of whom had entered into the racket for earning quick money, had a network of agents who would go into the Doaba region of Punjab and lure people to the Capital in the name of providing visas. After giving the victim the fake visa and pocketing the money, they would disappear.
