MOSCOW, NOV. 1. The Ukrainian Prime Minister, Viktor Yanukovich, supported by Russia, today took a slim lead in Ukraine's presidential election over the West-backed Opposition candidate, Viktor Yushchenko, with the race headed for a run-off vote in three weeks time. With 95 per cent of the ballots counted, Mr. Yanukovich was leading with 40.11 per cent of the vote and Mr. Yushchenko trailing just behind with 39.16 per cent, with the balance shared by the other 22 candidates. The turnout was an unusually high 76 per cent, the Central Election Commission said. Predictably, the vote was split along clearly regional lines, with Mr. Yanukovych getting strong support in eastern regions and the Russian-dominated Crimea while Mr. Yushchenko overwhelmingly dominated in the west. Both frontrunners fell short of the 50 per cent needed for an outright first round victory and a run-off will now be held on November 21.
